ESPN have not only been awarded the two packages of 46 live games for next season, but in a surprise move by the Premier League also Setanta's package of 23 matches per season for the 2010-13 period.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "The Premier League is extremely pleased to have added ESPN as a UK rights holder."

He added: "They have a formidable worldwide reputation and experience in sports and I am sure we will enjoy a long and fruitful relationship with them.

"I would like to thank ESPN, as well as all the other broadcasters who submitted bids, for their professionalism and effort in engaging in our sales process at such short notice.

"The timescale of our process was tight to say the least, and it is to the great credit of ESPN that they committed themselves to adding Barclays Premier League football to their already impressive portfolio of sports rights.

"The speed at which we have been able to conclude this deal means that the preparations for next season will be able to continue without interruption and fans and clubs will have certainty over the broadcasting of Barclays Premier League matches for the next four seasons."

Russell Wolff, executive vice president and managing director of ESPN International, said: "Premier League football is one of the world's most sought-after sports properties. We are very excited to be working with the Premier League and expanding our businesses in the UK.

"This move demonstrates our commitment to British sports fans and our ongoing commitment to delivering football to fans around the world across a variety of media."

  3. 57 The BBC don't bid for football because it's not a nob (toff) sport they are only interested in the Horse Trails,Rowing,Rugby (only Union can't have that north of the border Rugby) Horse racing (only if the Queen is there or its from one of the big meetings) If they do get one of the free football games it come's on 5 mins before kick off (can't let anything get in the way of Eastenders) and for that five mins you don't get the team news you just have to listen to that Jug Eared T**t.
If they stopped paying all the money to Ross,Moyals and everybody with a camp voice they may have some money left to bid and get the football.
Lets face it the money they have is our money as they have a BBC tax (Licence Fee) use my money for something i want to watch.
    Dave.

  5. so how are we in uk gonna get to watch espn???anyone have answer ..none of press have mentioned on how they will broadcast matches....more sensationalism than facts....
why didnt the fa give terrsatial tv chance to show some games live why is it always on pay tv ..............some matches should be reserved for terrastial tv

  6. 57 don't be stupid, world cup rights are free to air, ie they have to be shown on terrestial tv, ergo it will always be between bbc, utv or channel 4 who gets the rights to it. And as for selling to the highest bidder, given the wage bill & debts of the premier league clubs they have to sell to the highest bidder to ensure the future of the PL & its clubs.

  7. We need a new fa & premier league board who will look after OUR game & the interest's of us english fans, stop selling OUR game to the highest bidder & give it to the bbc so everyone in our country can see it, it is a disgrace that they go & sell the rights to bloody yanks, they cant even say football, the next thing to be sold for the money grabbing sods will be match of the day. Who will have the rights to the world cup??????

  8. Bad news for the American posters, this doesn't impact ESPN here stateside. FSC still has the rights to the EPL through this season. The games Setanta showed here we're subleased by FSC so this doesn't impact the television shown in the US other than we might get fewer games. Though it should be mentioned that the EPL rights auction for 2010-2013 is this fall.

In America ESPN gained a dual share of La Liga (W/ GolTV) to be shown on ESPN Desportes but lost the Champions League to FSC. Sorry to be a buzz kill.

  9. Does this mean Special 1 TV will be cancelled, or will Jose, Sven and Wayne take over the USA????

  10. Dear god please tell me they'll just pipe in the feed from England like FSC. I do NOT want to hear "JP" anymore. And I do not want to see the screen shrink to a PIP with a giant update on some other sport during the match, or a giant marquee underneath during the whole time. ESPN may dominate sports over in the States, but they sure can learn from FSC on how to show footy properly.

  11. comment 47 - it's all good, but let's start by saying 'football' instead of 'soccer'. ;)

  12. I can't speak for ESPN in US and its quality of football broadcasts, but I lived & worked in Hong Kong for a year a while back & ESPN were showing a LOT of live premiership matches, and they have been generally alright for me. From what I remember, a lot of commentators & show presenters were actually English, although obviously quality varied but you get that with different football programs in UK too anyways. I would have loved to see premiership on BBC for free as well, but we all know that's just not gonna happen. But ESPN is not gonna bring an american commentator over to broadcast premiership matches here, and I expect that most things will stay the same for us. Beside, I watched a lot of matches over the web/cable TV broadcasted in the language I don't understand at all, but once the match starts it's all good. ;)

  13. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I WANTED BBC OR SKY SPORTS! I DONT WANT THIS STUPID STUFF, I DONT WANT YANKY COMMENTATORS, OR CHEER LEADERS AT HALF TIME !!! I SPEAK FOR THE WHOLE OF ENGLAND!

  14. Also, ESPN has shown soccer before and I'm pretty sure they take a page from the people who've done it before...i.e. Sky and Setanta. Don't expect things to be so much different, ESPN wants the global audience. I wouldn't worry too much.

    From E, on Mon 22 Jun 11:23PM
  15. Yea...as an American...I watch soccer on mute. Sometimes the commentary just makes me cringe. Especially when they have a judgment on a red or yellow card. Ugh. And if someone passes it more than 15 yards...he's world class. Also the Champions League commentators here...aren't too great either.

Hopefully they'll consider their now international audience for the games and get some decent commentary. The people who comment on MLS games are balls and the people who comment on any international matches usually are the same one's for the MLS games. Favoritism abounds.

Also, ESPN won't make it pay-per-view...they only really do that for boxing or UFC. What will probably happen is, like someone else said, make it available on ESPNC (Classic) or ESPN2 or ESPN1 or ESPND (Deportes heh...) Or, they might make a new channel for soccer...although I doubt it. Like someone else said, there simply isn't enough programming, so soccer could fit in.

I just wish ESPN wouldn't show Fishing, Poker Tournaments, and Dominoes anymore. Its really getting absurd. I think if US citizens start watching some good soccer (EPL might fit us better than slower leagues) the fan base will grow. Pretty sure ESPN things that as well.

Just think, the #1 sports over here are Football and Nascar. People watch those for hard tackles (Full body) and car crashes... I think Paul Scholes might be a favorite player over here in no time, or Joey Barton.

  19. I have the setanta sports package at the moment. They have lost the premier league football and are about to lose their SPL rights. If I could get ESPN america other than through purchasing the setanta package I would get rid of setanta completely. Is there any way to see ESPN America other than buying the setanta package ?
