Transfers - Your view: Where now for Tevez?

Eurosport - Mon, 22 Jun 09:20:00 2009

After rejecting Manchester United's five-year contract offer, Carlos Tevez must now decide where his future lies, with Chelsea and Manchester City reportedly in the running.

2009 Manchester United Carlos Tevez - 0

A statement on the club's website said they had agreed to pay £25.5 million for the Argentine striker, but their contract offer was rejected.

Chelsea and Manchester City are understood to be the two clubs leading the chase for Tevez's signature, but where do you think the forward should ply his trade?

Here are some of your best comments:

Easy bloom: Tevez deserves to be paid more than Berbatov for obvious reasons; we all know, including Sir Alex. Fergie gave him less games to play so as to lower his value for when they could buy him, but it has backfired horribly. Each time he got the chance to play he showed what he is so h e deserves that money.

Brownt2002: Tevez will be missed but United only have themselves to blame for keeping him hanging on so long. He is a grafter who likes to live life without being in the limelight all the time - unlike a lot of British players. Best of luck at your new club Carlos.

Martinshimmin: I wish Tevez luck, but to be honest, I'm not sad to see him go as a player. This season his performances in general have been poor. You cannot pay £26 million for a worse Wayne Rooney clone. At the end of the day, if everyone is fit, I can't see him making the first team, and that is a lot of money for a substitute. We have never replaced Ruud van Nisterlrooy, and need an out-and-out striker who plays on the shoulder of the last defender, not another striker who likes to come deep as we have two of those players already. Bring in Karim Benzema.

StevE: Is Tevez worth the money? None of them are worth that sort of money, not a single one. There are a miniscule amount of players in the professional game who will be at any of the clubs for anything other than personal advantage and gain. That is not cynical, it is a fact of life. Football is a great game that has been ruined by this exorbitant financial situation along with players who claim to be tired because they have had a long season or played more than a game per week (utter rubbish, they run for about twenty minutes in a game).

Alison: If he has any sense he should come to Manchester City where he will be appreciated and treated right.

Craig C: Tevez is worth every penny he is paid - he is a true player who plays from the heart! He never lets the team down, whoever he plays for.

Ashley: Tevez has been a brilliant servant for United over the past two seasons and has scored some very important goals for us along the way, but he's not a natural goalscorer and that is exactly what we need now Ronaldo has gone. Rooney's goal return should be better next season but to pay Tevez £110,000 a week when he barely reaches double figures in goal scoring would have been stupid. He may run around a lot - but like Park Ji-Sung he's bad in the final third of the pitch and that's the position he's paid to be in and do well.

The Ridster: I wish the FA would step in and cap player's earnings to 55K a week but allow clubs to pay bonuses at the end of a season depending on the success of the team. I agree that footballers should be paid well and that their careers are limited but with sponsorship money and other revenues these guys earn fortunes on top of their basic pay. I bet any number of fans would be willing to play for their club on just one week's wage. They have the best job in the world and some of the money being thrown around is just ridiculous. In short, no player is worth that kind of money.

  1. Best comment is Ashley's! Why in the world would you want to pay big money for a guy who scored 5 goals all year? His ratio is one goal every 353 minutes, calculate the price of those goals in light of his salary and you wil find out that C.Ronaldo is cheaper than Tevez! I do like Tevez, but you'd have to be cookoo to pay him that much!

  7. [edit] He has left because SAF's and David Gill's dodgy 'negotiation techniques' with Jaroobchian and the MSI investment group of trying to publicly lower his price by saying he wasn't worth 25MIL and not playing him with regular starting football after he could prove his worth. They both also started moaning about how difficult to deal with an agency instead of a football club, but it's not. It was obvious that SAF and David GIll hated Jaroobchian for some reason, probably because he is so clever, but he is only a succesful business man who operates within the law despite all the press hoorah in the press about him being a 'dodgy evil foreigner agent'. You still have to pay money at the end of the day and they used the press to try and make him tear up his contract under European laws, which didn't go down well as he has a very good relationship with Jaroobchian - very foolish by David Gill and SAF.

Lastly, Tevez has been desperate to have a permanent contract for ages. People have a short memory but consistantly over the last two years he has made many a press release expressing his wish to remain at United until the end of his career, with loads of comments about how much he loved manchester, the club and the fans - it seemed the only way to communicate directly with Ferguson after all. SAF used the transfer market as an incentive for him to play well, thinking that if he made it clear that he won the next Champions League, only there and then he 'may' have a contract. This didn't provide an a good atmosphere for Tevez who wanted contract confirmation after a year to assure stability for him and his family, he's a human being with pride that doesn't like being messed around like most people wouldn't. The ones that only care about the money are SAF and David Gill – now their wily negotiation techniques have blown up in their faces and it's hilarious.

  13. There is a lot of talk on here about players' salaries, and in particular a common view that nobody is worth those kinds of fees. I think what people mean to say is that THEY wouldn't pay anyone such high wages. In truth there is only one test of if anything is worth any given price, and that test is "Will anyone pay it?"

If someone is prepared to pay a price for an item, whether it is £500,000 a week for Ronaldo or £50m for a rare painting, then that is it's worth. That how economics works.

  14. berbatov had second highest assist and scored more prem goals than tevez so stats suggest berbatov is more useful to utd, lots of people dont like him because he looks like he is not trying but anyone that really watches him knows he has a sublime touch, holds the ball great and works for the team with lovelly passing, tevez does run around alot though.. also people say tevez doesnt play enough, stats again show he played more minutes than berbatov but tevez scored a couple of important goals so that who people remember, it aint fair on berba really. tevez to city and lets get benzema.

  15. No his not, like all the other over paid directors, actors, singers, models ...... but if you want the best then you have to pay for it! I have no doubt Teves is one of the best and if he is given a regular first team role will soon prove it for any team he plays for! I would love to see him come to Liverpool but 110K a week?

  16. One more thing: Footballers are not the highest paid sportsmen but i guess most of the contributors only watch and read only about football. Long as the clubs can afford the wage bills let the good times of epl continue. Why do we think this is the most sought after league in terms of TV rights all over the world? In my country Nigeria men pay for cable broadcast mainly to watch epl.

  17. Comment 36 is amazing and the final suggestion is to me spot on. However people should stop comparing Berbatov and Tevez. They may both be strikers but have different types of contribution to the benefit of the team. In summary both of them are needed. If Tevez asks for pay parity with Berbatov, United should negotiate and arrive at an amicable compromise. He should not be called greedy as almost all of us ask for pay rise at one time or the other. Liverpool will agree to his demands but he is not thinking of going there because of the rivalry. Man City will pay him at least 30,000 more weekly but he is choosing United over them. What do fans want from this guy?

  19. United Fan here...This is a joke ... no man on earth is worth what they get paid. For what? We enjoy football, all of us as fans but come to think of it and seriously who is worth getting paid that much? What is he? Superman? GOD? Think of many of us here that earn to live 1% the way they do ... it's mad. Let him go if he wants to be greedy... he earns 95K a week already. This is my point of view.

From Imad A, on Sat 20 Jun 8:14AM
  20. LMAO greed! cr7 is the greedy one! Tevez wants to be paid as much as evry1 else in the club, if berba earns that much y not him? and him not being able to score double figure goals, really. If u give him more time on the field maybe HE WOULD. Compare him to berba who just plays attack, tezez actually will help on defense. He deserves a better team and should leave man u.
