Martina Navratilova thinks it is cheating, Serena Williams does not even know she is doing it and now there is a Portuguese teenager who appears to cry out in agony when she hits the ball.
Grunting is back on the tennis agenda at the world's most famous tournament, and the big noise at Wimbledon could be 16-year-old Michelle Larcher de Brito.
At the French Open, her opponent Aravane Rezai complained about the racket across the net, telling the umpire it was distracting her.
Unrepentant as she heads into Wimbledon's first round as a wild card, Larcher de Brito has said grunting is "just something I have done always since I started playing tennis. I am going to keep on doing it because it is really part of my game".
Nine-times Wimbledon champion Navratilova, who found the grunting of Monica Seles off-putting, feels tennis officials should take a stand.
"The grunting has reached an unacceptable level. It is cheating pure and simple and it is time for something to be done," she said.
Jimmy Connors grunted his way to eight grand slam victories in the 1970s and 80s. Ivan Lendl complained that Andre Agassi's grunting put him off. Today female players are under the spotlight as "decibel demons".
A lion's roar is reckoned to reach 110 decibels. Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, who says she grunted since the age of four and cannot help it, has been measured at 101.
At her pre-Wimbledon news conference, the first question to Sharapova was about grunting.
She was asked to comment on former champion Michael Stich saying that women players should not grunt because it was not sexy and sex appeal was the main attraction of women's tennis.
"No, I don't have an opinion on that," she replied crisply.
Also probed about her grunting, which has been measured at 88.9 decibels, 10-times grand slam champion Williams said it was "definitely not conscious. Sometimes I am so zoned I don't grunt, sometimes I'm so zoned that I do grunt".
Larcher de Brito was trained at the Florida academy of Nick Bollettieri, who nurtured such grand slam champions as Sharapova, Seles and Agassi.
He says his academy has never encouraged grunting but argues that it does help players to release energy and stay focused.
This is the perfect opportunity for British tabloid newspapers to plug in their courtside "gruntometers" once more and wax lyrical with noise metaphors about police sirens, aircraft taking off and bull elephants bellowing.
Wimbledon officials, meanwhile, will be all ears.
"We will be monitoring the situation. We work together with the International Tennis Federation and other grand slams on this issue," a tournament spokesman said.
The rules of the game state: "If the player is hindered on the point by a deliberate act of the opponent, the player shall win the point".
Wimbledon umpires will need to decide if the player is grunting on purpose. The ball is firmly in their court.

If someone cries painfully, she or he has to be forfeited and sent to the next doctor by the referee.
If the doctor finds no reasons for pains, she or he should be banned fro one year, as it was an attempt to play foul.
It is THAT easy.
The referee alreday HAS the power to forfeit an injured player if the health is in danger.
The more I think about this the more I blame Nick Bollettieri's academy, it just seems to me the the biggest offenders train there. This seems to be part of the training in a attempt to give a player an advantage over their opponent. It is time to start penalizing the offenders.
BTW, my wife will not for any reason watch Screechapova or any of the other screamers including but not limited to the Williams sisters. We have tickets to the US Open but in the opening week will watch other matches on outside courts in favor of listening to the screeching.
For us the best tennis tournament is one where all of the noise makers lose early, this would be perfect for us
And Martina's record gives her more right to speak on this matter than any of us (including me)..
As much as i too i get irritated at the grunts(actually one of the reason's i don't rlly love watching female tennis),i think this young player deserves some credits on the stage she is now in her career and at this young age rather than many topics abt her Grunts, lol poorthing
The Florida academy of Nick Bollettieri is probably right grunting cna help release energy(and anger...lol they forgot to include that)
i also cnt help but laugh at the way Larcher de Brito answered the questions she was asked about her grunting,so much attitude i feel....she could have said those same words in a nicer way but its all good she definitely is a 16 year old, in the future she'll learn the right way.let her be and act her age, if she don't do it now then it ll be a problem
Keep Up the good play girl! you'll hav a bright future ahead of you! Goodluck
Never heard a row like it ! me i switched off
honeybeecro7, you are correct. Workers who are exposed to noise in excess of 90 decibels must, by law, be provided with industrial ear protectors. That means that, unless these girls (and some of the men too) are stopped from screaming and bellowing, the umpire, line judges and ball kids should all be wearing earmuffs. Wimbledon, and other tournaments in any country with similar laws (all of the EU and the USA included), are breaking the law by allowing this to continue.
if grunting is cheating...then why the WTA don't add a new rule so that no players are allowed 2 grunt in a tennis match...instead of complaining everytime during a tournment. Some agrees but some disagrees and this arguement about grunting will last forever. They should look 4 a solution 2 solve this problem. As for this point,GO MICHELLE!!!!Grunt all u wanted!!!!!
navratilova should shut her @#$% @#$%. no one care about her,her time has come and gone why cant she shut the hell up. she feels she is tennis royalty. did she 4get that it was her that made maria the player maria is..tennis players should be allowed to grunt, if grunts are banned all the top players should boycott tennis(serena, venus, maria) and show those @#$% what they're really missing out. no one wud care to watch women tennis if those 3 are not playing
Seles grunts of "ah hee" after every strike was nothing compared to the aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh of De Brito
sajoao72-if MB is Michelle Brito I disagree that she is from a poor country(Portugal is hardly poor) and it's not just about her(well it shouldn't be because she isn't the only one screaming)-everyone should stop screaming or reduce it to a normal level(Ivanović and Dementieva have acceptable level of noise).
HOW ABOUT "GRUNTING" DURING SEX????
If watching tennis match while someone is screaming is tough just imagine what it must be like only meters away from someone who makes this kind of noise(not just Larcher de Brito but Sharapova,Azarenka, today Kutuzova, sometimes Williams sisters and so on).
And isn't it illegal to be exposed to certain level of noise in some countries?
This isn't just coming from English media-discussions about noise that players make has been going for a long time.
The noise the women are making is getting so distracting that I have stopped watching women's matches. Yes, there are men grunts but they do not seem to be as loud (maybe it is the pitch), the women seem to take it to the next level. Why is it that the loudest screeches seem to be players from Nick Bollettieri's academy?
And when it is distracting to your opponent it crosses the line and borders on cheating. Tennis in general and women's tennis in particular need to get a handle on this before they loose more viewers.
I'll reformulate 2nd part: If MB was english or american, this grunting thing would never be a issue. Unfortunately, she's from a poor country and does what others do too by far better!!
Why second part of my coment is "invalid coment"???? (trying to complete 39)
After reading all these coments, articles, and all other tons of trash on this subject, I can't help throwing in my own!
Point 1: Michelle GRITO, I mean Brito (:)), is indeed THE LOUDEST TENNIS PLAYER EVER. Period.
Point 2: She is a great tennis player with lots of talent yet to come out!
Point 3: Following some coments in here, here's a list of some amazing cheating tennis players: Agassi, Sharapova, Serena (Yes!!) Williams, Vennus (Yes, too) Williams, Selles (very big Yes!). Oh, didn't you all notice? (Yes, you too, Ms. Navratilova, didn't you notice?)... this is just a sample of some notables on the list of the "cheating"!
oh sorry miles mcdonald but I thought Navratilova was czech not english you pr ick
unbelievable from navratilova, should know better really. its completely natural to make noise whilst running around the court hitting the ball at over seventy miles per hour, its not nice to be called a cheat at anything especially something you cant help. if officials did make it stop the players would be concentrating more than the tennis, which is what we want to see.
@ Bobito: do u think screaming on court is not playing the game fairly? She screams cause is the best way that she can express and play well...that what i think...she will not going to stop just because some Navratilova and British press are saying that screaming on court its like cheating...plz guys...
I do respect Martina Navratilova, a lot actually, but i cant agree with her in this point. Ok, its her opinion, but c'mon, how can she say that screaming on court is cheating? Each player has his way to play. Let her play plz.
You are right Jailson, not every player is the same. Some play the game fairly, others don't. I dislike those who don't.
