Blues appeal UEFA punishments

Chelsea have appealed against the punishments handed out by UEFA following the club's Champions League semi-final defeat to Barcelona, the governing body confirmed on Monday.

UEFA fined the Blues £85,000 for the improper conduct of their players and missile throwing by their supporters after the match at Stamford Bridge.

Striker Didier Drogba was banned for six European games, two of them suspended for two years, while defender Jose Bosingwa was banned for four matches, one suspended. UEFA revealed a date for the appeal will be announced in due course.

The Blues had been expected to appeal the punishments so the confirmation by UEFA is no surprise.

Ivorian striker Drogba was given a six-match ban for his foul-mouthed confrontation with referee Tom Henning Ovrebo while Portugal defender Bosingwa labelled Ovrebo a "thief".

Referee Ovrebo was at the centre of controversy after rejecting four Chelsea penalty appeals during the second leg of the semi-final.

Chelsea were leading through Michael Essien's early strike but Andres Iniesta's late away goal gave Barca a place in the final, where they beat Manchester United to win the trophy.

Drogba's foul-mouthed rant at the official was seen by millions of television viewers, as he directly addressed a camera on the side of the pitch. He later apologised for his behaviour.

If the appeal is unsuccessful the ban will rule him out of most of the club's Champions League group stage next season.

  2. While respecting the reasoning of UEFA in handing such outrageous punishment to Chelsea, I really quite find it very difficult to comprehend such reasoning. My question is this 1. Considering the nature of officiating which was quite glaring to everyone that watched the match is UEFA not being too hash on Chelsea? 2. Are they saying that the center referee did a nice Job? 3. Will this not empower referees to be reckless just like overbo did?
Anyway what ever may be their reasoning, I think I totally disagree with such, permit me if I say that UEFA is being too myopic with no form of reprimanding of the centre referee.
Anyway can you clap for yourselves for Job will done.

Drogba got what he deserved and that comes from a 40 year Chelsea fan. We've always had bad press: first the fan rep, now the players. Chelsea function perfectly well as a team without Drogba so what's the problem? All Chelsea need is another world-class striker to give Drogba a bit of competitin for the first-team spot. Michael Owen would fit the bill. He underperformed at Newcastle, but who wouldn't concidering the turmoil there. Outbid Hull and sign him up; and maybe Drogba will start behaving himself!

Chelsea have to be very sure that they can provide a big enough sob story in order to have the punishment reduced. What do you think it should be? Maybe something like...Didier has turned into a petulant whiney powder puff with grand delusions who throws tantrums when things don't go his way, because his mummy took him off the breast too soon and packed him off to live with a wicked uncle who made him eat worms...poor cherub. Not bad eh? that'll have them all crying into their Bacardi Breezers.

  9. What Drogba said was exactly the same as 42,000 others in the ground that night. Blame Sky for screening it because it didn't go out live. Have UEFA or Ovrebo made any apology yet?
