Football League to enforce Saints deduction

Mon 22 Jun, 06:03 PM

The Football League on Monday stood firm in their ruling that Southampton's new owners will not be allowed to appeal against their 10-point deduction for next season.

A takeover by the Pinnacle group, which is backed by Matt Le Tissier, has been delayed because they are unhappy with Football League insisting they forgo the right to challenge the points deduction.

The league's board held an emergency meeting on Monday and were unanimous in their decision to enforce the ruling.

Afterwards, the league released a statement saying: "The board of the Football League met today to consider representations from the 'Pinnacle Group' with regard to their proposed takeover of Southampton Football Club.

"The Football League has the responsibility to ensure all League clubs start the season with certainty as regards the competition they compete in.

"With that in mind, the Football League has responded directly to the Pinnacle Group, and will continue to liaise with their representatives going forward."

Pinnacle need the Football League to grant them a licence in order to compete in League One next season but insist they remain confident of the takeover going through.

Saints were docked 10 points after the club's parent company, Southampton Leisure Holdings plc, went into administration.

  2. The football league want the new owners to waive there RIGHT to appeal the point decision, if they don't they will not get a licence. That's called BLACKMAIL !! SFC have not said they will appeal, all they wanted was the right to appeal should they wish to. The right all clubs should have !

Why did the FL take 3 weeks and after pinicals exclusitivity period to spring this on the potential new buyers ?

    BLACKMAIL plain and simple.

  3. Of course you can appeal if you want. A Judicial Review. Costs a lot of money. Who is going to pay for it? You are bankrupt.

  5. We are only asking for the right to appeal, if they the FL believe they acted correctly and made an honest and correct decision then why should they fear an appeal.
Egg on there face springs to mind.
This is doing nothing for the image of the FL, it only shows what there really like.
I dont know what the FL Rule Book says, but surely we can appeal to a body above them, everyone in all walks of life have the right of appeal, and we should not give in to them the FL.

(Is Blackmail illegal?) or are they above the laws of the land.

  6. AS a fan of a lower club who has seen this before and his club put through the mill by the leagues so called leaders (piss up and brewery come to mind!)I can only feel sympathy for the fans of the Saints but having said that after almost destroying Luton and Bournemouth last year, I'm afraid that you are going to suffer it like many of us have before because they can never go back on these types of decisions due to the legal hole they have puy themselves in. So sorry Saints fans you will just have to take it like we all have but in the knowledge that you aint the first and wont be the last,

To be honest I have no sympathy. When this happened to Leeds Utd (remember they were docked two seasons on the trot) nobody was interested and we received little sympathy. I am afraid that Southampton have got what they deserved. Welcome to the 1st Division for a few seasons!
