Nottinghamshire v Yorkshire

Mon 22 Jun, 09:13 PM

A blazing 66 from opener Ali Brown led Nottinghamshire Outlaws to only their second victory in this season's Twenty20 Cup, as they beat Yorkshire Carnegie by 11 runs.

The 39-year-old smashed four sixes and five fours in a 32-ball innings, as part of a 110-run partnership for the second wicket with Matt Wood (46) in a total of 165 for four.

Yorkshire never kept in touch with the required run rate - and once Andrew Gale was caught off Mark Ealham for 76, their innings wilted.

England seamer Ryan Sidebottom, given permission to play by the ECB before the Ashes, then picked up two wickets in two balls to finish off his former county - who finished on 154 for eight.

Although captain Chris Read was yorked second ball by Deon Kruis, Nottinghamshire got off to a flying start - with Brown and Wood adding 110 in the first 11 overs.

Brown, signed from Surrey in the winter, had only managed 69 runs in his previous 13 one-day and Twenty20 matches against county opposition. But he belied his terrible form with some swashbuckling strokes, hitting Azeem Rafiq for consecutive sixes before the 18-year-old's quicker ball shattered his stumps.

Wood had missed the first two months of the season with an ankle injury - but after making his return against Oxford UCCE last week, he weighed in with three fours and a six of his own before hitting Kruis straight to deep midwicket.

That sucked the momentum from the home innings, with only one boundary coming between the 12th and 17th over - Will Jefferson struggling, in particular, before he was bowled by Ajmal Shahzad.

Samit Patel finished 32 not out. But the total looked well short of what had seemed possible with Brown and Wood at the crease.

Yet with Gale unable to find a partner to hit boundaries, Yorkshire quickly found themselves playing catch-up.

Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Michael Vaughan both fell cheaply, and Jacques Rudolph became one of two run-out victims.

After Gale fell, Sidebottom bowled both Gerard Brophy and Shahzad; Luke Fletcher had Tim Bresnan lbw, and Adam Lyth fell in the final over - failing to make his ground coming back for a second run.
