Michael Owen has confirmed he will leave Newcastle when his contract expires at the end of the month.
The 29-year-old, who rejected a new deal at St James' Park at the turn of the year, is to end his stay on Tyneside four years after making a club record £17million switch from Real Madrid.
Owen's decision comes as no surprise as the Magpies attempt to slash their wage bill. He told Sky Sports News: "I don't think I'm going to be re-signing at Newcastle. I don't think they are going to offer me a contract and I would prefer to play in the Premier League or a top division somewhere else."
His availability has been made known to a series of clubs both at home and abroad by his representatives in recent weeks, and he has admitted he is looking to stay in the Premier League, or to play at a comparative level in another country.
He added: "I'm still a Newcastle player, but I think it will only be for a matter of weeks.
"There are plenty of clubs who would interest me, but we will see where that is, whether that's home or abroad.
"There has been a lot of interest from abroad, and quite a bit from at home as well.
"Obviously, the Premier League is where I feel I belong. I played a year out in Spain and enjoyed it at Real Madrid, but it definitely confirmed to me that I prefer the Premier League.
"So if it was to be a good English club, that would be my preference, but I have had quite a lot of interest from abroad, so I wouldn't rule that out."

Move to a "Good" English club....They only sign "Good" players mate!
As a Newcastle Fan I cannot wait for him to leave. it would free up £6 Million a year in wages. I do feel sorry for the Physio's though as they will not be as busy next season!
He can`t admit that he`s finished, good riddance to him.
Hope Phil Brown comes to his senses as we don't want any more hangers on we've enough already.Fulham and spurs conned Brown into taking thier left overs please no more i'd rather see some young and up coming lads who want to play football every week not just sit arround drawing stupidly high wages
He's looking to stay in prem league! He could've if he'd pulled his thumb out of his bottom! Sadly he'l get what he wants.
just hope nufc have learnt there lesson on s**t players and huge wages.there should be a cap on ridiculous pay packets.
He will be a lost for the new club.
He won't be any loss.
the problem is the greedy so and so will never accept what you call reasonable wages........and he will be in the sick bay most of the time. Lets see if there are any mug takers other than phil brown!
wonder if he is claiming incapacity benefit?
I don't think his style of play suites the likes of La Liga or Serie A.
He's a very direct player, meaning he'd find it hard to adapt to the slow build-up play of those leagues.
While his injuries have certainly hampered him, I still feel he has much to offer. If a club manages to sign him on with reasonable wages, I think it'd be a great signing.
Accrington Stanley will take him, they need a new kit man.
