Shearer hails Sir Bobby

Sir Bobby Robson earned himself legendary status on Tyneside by guiding Newcastle out of relegation trouble and into the Champions League.

That is the view of Alan Shearer, who was part of the side which emerged from the despair of the Ruud Gullit era under Robson to establish itself as a force both at home and in Europe.

The former Magpies boss will be back at St James' Park on July 26 as he stages a re-run of the 1990 World Cup semi-final between his England team and Germany in aid of his cancer charity.

And Shearer knows he is guaranteed a hero's welcome for what he achieved during his five years in charge at the club he supported as a boy, but for which he never appeared during his own distinguished playing career.

Shearer told the Evening Chronicle: "Sir Bobby turned this club around when they were at the bottom of the Premier League. He will always be remembered for that. He is a fantastic man and he did some great things for Newcastle. He had the chance to put something back into his home-town team and he took it.

"When he was here, he did some great things for us. We all remember the 8-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday, and I have plenty of fond memories from my career of the time he was at Newcastle."
