The Clydesdale Bank Premier League have confirmed they are "actively engaging in the process of selling their domestic broadcasting rights" after broadcasters Setanta failed to make their outstanding payment of £3million.
The move comes just three days after the English Premier League terminated their contract with the Irish broadcaster when they were unable to make a £30million payment.
SPL executive chairman Lex Gold said: "Setanta has been unable to meet our extended deadline for the outstanding £3 million payment to the SPL and, in terms of the notice previously issued, our British broadcasting rights for season 2009/10 and beyond revert to us."
He continued: "We are now actively engaging in the process of selling our domestic broadcasting rights for next season and beyond."
At a hastily arranged press conference at Hampden, SPL executive chairman Lex Gold said: "Setanta missed the deadline for the £3million that we set for them.
"We set three deadlines and we wanted to work with Setanta who have been a great partner of ours.
"They have spent £60million in supporting Scottish football and our board were determined to give them every possible chance to work through the problems that they had.
"That process has been lengthy and intensive but the deadline was the final deadline so our right reverted to us as of 3pm. So we are now in the market for selling those broadcasting rights for next season and beyond."
Gold continued: "We aim to do that as quickly as possible given that start football season starts on August 15. That needs to be carried through quickly.
"But I believe that, in sporting terms, we have the most valuable sporting product in Scotland and Scotland is important to broadcasters, so I remain pretty hopeful that we will deliver an early outcome."

ALEX W: I think you will find that I try to post a comment relevant to the story each and every time. The fact that certain others come on here purely to "stir things up" will usually be met with the same level of abuse the perpetrators choose to dish out. And, please note that a legal ruling has now OFFICIALLY ruled that the Famine Song is illegal, so anybody posting comments regarding that topic will be reported to the Police, not just Yahoo!!
And Paul G is the test tube son
David W... Alex W... May well be brothers... Maybe George W is their Dad?!
Pt11....No Xmas card this year then...hope thats not to boring for u!!!!!!!
ok ginger if you can honestly say that every post you make is relevant to the topic then carry on. as for the topic, i don't care who takes over because the spl has been dying for years now and no amount of money is going to save it.(just my opinion, but feel free to jump all over it)
Singin' Ginger!! - well said. And for the record I dont support either of the OF. Rumours this morning that ESPN are in talks with Gold and his cronies.
15 - Alex, if the guy had at least mentioned the topic being discussed here, then he might have got away with making an after-point, but plain and simple, he is purely a noise-up merchant!
As for the point about Setanta, as Stuart said, Rangers, Celtic, and Aberdeen were dead against them, but they were out-voted by the other SPL clubs on the deal. Lex Gold and Gordon Smith simply ratified the proposal to sell to Setanta. Now, everybody is suffering because of the short-sightedness. Sooner a deal is done with another broadcaster, the better for Scottich football!
Everyone new this would happen when spl clubs went with this deal
