World Cup 2010 - Omens point to England win

Eurosport - Tue, 22 Jun 12:31:00 2010

England fans worried about England's crunch World Cup clash with Slovenia on Wednesday can take heart from two lucky omens in the Three Lions' favour.

Fabio Capello's side will wear an all-red kit for the game in Port Elizabeth, following in the footsteps of England players at the 1962 World Cup, who won two games in the unusual strip.

England's regular change strip consists of red shirts, white shorts and red socks, but FIFA insist that all teams in South Africa offer a darker option if they cannot wear their first-choice white kit.

And the game will be shown live on the BBC, the station that boasts a 62 per cent win record when televising England World Cup games.

Results since 1982, when their games have been split between the BBC and ITV, show that England do better than when their games are aired on ITV, which has just a 30 per cent win rate.

Both England's previous games at the current World Cup have been televised by ITV. England drew the first 1-1 with the USA before putting in a dire performance in a goalless stalemate with Algeria.

Those results have put Steven Gerrard's side on the brink of a humiliating exit from the tournament, although victory against Slovenia will ensure they progress to the knockout stages.

  1. We win 62 % of games on the BBC and only 30 % on ITV ? Simple - ban ITV from broadcasting the World Cup and all future Internationals - problem solved.

  2. Why can't we find a manager from our own country instead of this foreigner who is getting paid a lot of money for not a lot of work.

  6. Agree with 'Tony': Good teams rely on high quality football to win. Rubbish teams on voodoo and tealeaf readings. One might be able to argue that relying on strip colour and tv channel does not fall in the 'high quality football' category... but then I am not a football expert.
This team is rubbish and I really really hope that I will have to eat those words this afternoon...

  9. nice that multi millionaire george osborne believes that the england match will cheer us all up after his 'look after our own' budget....am sure those other multi millionaire football players will be delighted the rich are back in charge!

  10. I think maybe people are clutching at straws here. Their previous games have had a lot of coverage on the BBC and it's not done them any good, and as for the kit, I think the only way that that would work is if they were all wearing the original kit from the 1966 game!! They haven't got the hunger anymore to wine it seems, and it's a shame as England as a country need this bit of a morale boost.

  11. Where does all this dislike almost hatred towards England extend from ?

  12. Has it come to this now? We have to rely on the colour of the kit and who broadcasts the match in order to win. Not on skill or teamwork. Great, we might as well not watch England and cheer Chile or somebody straight away. They deserve it more.

From tony, on Wed 23 Jun 23:37
  13. Well with Gerrard playing in an ALL RED kit (instead of that tepid England kit) it might be a good thing.

Ah comment 244. How many predictions have we heard before of the onslaught of goals by Endland (against US, against Algeria...) Well at least this time the OMENS are good so there's no problem because ALL the players and staff will be wearing their lucky underpants as well (thanks Vincent)!

  18. i am not sure why people have to spend there day slagging each other off its just a football game. If England are good enough they will win. they will need a slice of luck as all teams in the world cup. having watched most games I would say we could be in for a surprise winner this time out.

Why can't the english just face up to the fact that there team is not what they think it is. England are not the best team in this world cup. The ball is not your downfall, coz all the other teams are useing the same 1. Could you please stop going on about 1966. You don't hear us scots going on about 1967 when we DESTROYED the then world champs. Get it up ya!

From Shaun, on Wed 23 Jun 22:32
  20. England my arse ! All the wingeing in the world will not improve a mediocre team who have no realistic chance of winning the World Cup but I would bet a grand that they will go through to the next stages. As an Irishman I have seen justice served by France exiting early!I hope England do stay in as at least we can see them humiliated later on when they meet some proper teams this is not an anti English sentiment just a view that they are not good enough and it will take a stuffing to get a great footballing country to take stock !
