Potters crash to Nurnberg defeat

Tue 22 Jul, 10:15 PM

Premier League newcomers Stoke went down to an Angelos Charisteas strike in a 1-0 friendly defeat against FC Nurnberg in Austria on Tuesday. The 28-year old, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2004 final against Portugal, clinically fired past Steve Simonsen just after the half-hour.

Goalkeeper Simonsen produced a number of saves to keep the German side, relegated from the Bundesliga, at bay.

Glenn Whelan and Jon Parkin went closest for Tony Pulis' side, while new £5.5million striker Dave Kitson had a lively 45 minutes before being replaced at half-time.
