Jerry Burgess says Valentino Rossi's US Grand Prix overtaking moves commonplace in the '80s and '90s.
Valentino Rossi's Fiat Yamaha crew chief, Jerry Burgess, has rebuffed Casey Stoner's claims that some of the Italian's moves were too aggressive - and believes what was seen in Sunday's US Grand Prix was commonplace during the '80s and 90s.
Stoner had dominated practice and qualifying at Laguna Seca, putting him on course for his fourth race victory in a row.
Even world championship leader Rossi had suggested a 30-second head start was needed to beat the young Australian, but some last-minute improvements to his M1 helped fuel an epic battle.
Rossi dived inside Stoner on the run up to the Corkscrew on lap one and, determined not to allow the Australian to unleash his speed advantage, furiously counter-attacked whenever Stoner regained the lead.
The pair were side-by-side for lap after lap, until Stoner made a small mistake under braking for the final turn on lap 24 of 32, running wide and dropping his Ducati in the lose gravel. Stoner remounted to finish a safe second, 13 seconds behind Rossi.
After the race, Stoner - who initially refused to shake hands with Rossi - said that some of the passes were "the most aggressive I've seen in a long time", while his Ducati team boss Livio Suppo added that "they both could have crashed as a result of manoeuvres which, in our opinion, were a bit over the limit on Vale's part."
But Burgess, the man behind 500cc title success for Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan before joining forces with Rossi in 2000, brushed off such suggestions.
"I think that if Casey had raced in the '80s and '90s with Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Rainey and Mick Doohan, he'd have seen that every weekend," the Australian told the official MotoGP website. "It was probably something that he wasn't particularly expecting; [he] probably expected to win the race easily like he'd dominated in the practices."
"We had a few tenths to find in each section after qualifying, Casey had been strong all weekend and again in the race - the first two-thirds of the race... It was our job to get in front of him. It's very difficult to pass around here so our strategy was to get in front of Casey as soon as we could."
After losing points to Stoner in the three previous rounds, Rossi has now joined Stoner in winning four races so far this season - and extended his advantage over the #1 from 20 to 25 points heading into the summer break.
Former world championship leader Dani Pedrosa, forced to withdraw from the US GP due to his Sachsenring injuries, is now four points further back in third.
Looking ahead, Burgess confirmed that the next month marks the last real chance for technical upgrades to be introduced this season.
"We have a two day after the next race in the Czech Republic [on August 17] so we'll be going through some [new] equipment there," he said. "The Japanese have some time to work, but of course after Misano [August 31] we spend quite a lot of time on the road so we have to be ready for the last part of the season."
Seven races and 175 points remain up for grabs between now and the end of the 2008 racing season, at Valencia on October 26.

Tons of information????? What a load of @#$%! What were those tons of information telling Stoner at turn eleven at Laguna Seca, or at Brno when he laid it down? Those tons of information should have been telling him "You missed your braking point, you idiot!" Or how about this, "You're falling, you moron!!"
With Rossi and Pedrosa on Michelin rubber last year, Stoner was gifted that championship. Of the top ten finishers at any race last year, most were on Bridgestones. Stoner had no REAL competition. This year appears to be a different story.
And yes, the Ducati IS the fastest bike presently on the grid at any circuit it would seem. Though Laguna seca is a very tight and technical circuit, Ducati did have the fastest top speed down the straight. That's FACT, not fiction!
I agree with Brimo. Two races and two trips to the sand trap. So much for being "MATCHED perfectly". FORE! Hahaha!
Hey Bozzy, at least Casey has a wife. Where are the females in Rossi's garage ??????
rossi's back, brings back memories of the sete battles!!! oh and stoner your kleenex are in the post ;-)
Bozzy, you really are a plonker!
You dont have to be a motorbike racer to have the right to give a comment on here.
You may race bikes but were obviously at the back of the queue when god was handing out brains!!LOL
Just because you've done a bit of sunday riding with the boys doesnt mean you're an expert, in fact I think it was you who was eating my dust on a weekend run to Matlock the other week. You were riding a 125cc werent you? LoooooL Shmuck
kaveiros75, who's talking about mix and match? we are talking about ROSSI and STONER, we are talking SKILL..........
Some people still cannot understand this: Ducati and Stoner just MATCHED perfectly!
Just as Capirossi did on the 990cc machines. You can give a top rider the best bike and still not produce good results if he doesn't feel good on it (see Melandri).
Fastest bike? On what terms? You forget that Laguna Seca and Sachsering are some of the tightest and most technical circuits in the clanedar. And yet Stoner perfoprmed unbelievably for 2 years in Lagubna Seca and dominated this year's wet Sachsering.
And yes... Stoner crashed too many times on his first year beacuse HE WAS ON A HONDA!!! ha ha ha
Seriously, the guy REALLY pusses the machines over their limits and HONDA bikes, never gave him the "information" he so much needed. On the contrary, DUCATI has a fast bike that can also provide tons of information about the grip. As it is the case with most European bikes -even commercial ones. THAT'S the difference.
well guys stop arguing, lets hope that stoner change the bike to another manufactures, and you 'all the audiences' will know is he(stoner) still in the BIG FIVE?
Regardless who wins the 2008 title, one thing remanins very clear. ROSSI IS THE BETTER RIDER! To have won that race on a bike that was at least 0.5 seconds slower per lap is all the proof anyone needs. Yes, Stoner does have the faster bike. (Admit it). Lets not forget that before he came to the Ducati team, Stoner did nothing but crash, and crash, and crash again. Do you think Rossi's performance on the same bike would have been as horrid? Doubtful. And chew on this; Stoner was NOT Ducati's first choice of riders. He was 4th or 5th at best. That should tell you that even Ducati does not believe that Stoner is the best rider on the grid. As his team mate Melandri stated, "Stoner is getting the best use of the electronics than anyone on the grid". The machinery does matter.
Rossi never even swapped any paint with Stoner so what's he crying about? Ducati should build a tissue holder onto the bike for when he gets those Rossi moments and I've got a feeling there will be more of them to come before the years out.
Fact, Casey Stoner is a great motorcycle rider, one of the best in the world on a bike that fits him like a glove.
Fact, Valentino Rossi is the greatest motorcycle racer in the world on a bike that is not up to the Ducati standard.
The result of this was one of the best races I have seen, with the advantages of the one offset by the other.
If its wasnt for Vallentino, Cassey would have won by 30 seconds from Chris. Who would want to watch that.
anyway Stoner will still win the 2008 title, why? because he is faster than rossi is.
stop wining about "faster bike" this is realy bullshit, you all know that! i loved watching the race and yes some of the moves Rossi did were on the limit, not over the limit!
I can understand were Stoner's coming from but this has also to do with the disappointment he has to deal with.
mark my words: Stoner will win a race of the next 7 the same way Rossi did last weekend!
btw. a lot of the "children" submitting comments about other things than racing schould go and play with their dolls
Pick the dummy up and start sucking on it, Casey! If you want to make MotoGP as boring as F1, get Bubble Wrap to sponsor you! Best race of the year and for a long time. Rossi and Stoner were awesome, but the Doctor just wanted it more. Casey likes to win by a country mile, out on his own. He's just found out what makes Rossi the GOAT. What a time for the summer break. Also, give JT a works bike and then see what he does!!!
wait a minute, rossi won year in year out no problem ?? think sete and max may have something too say about that ! rossi is the goat others are great, stonner included ! but where would moto gp be now if 46 had not put on a show ! mabye casey should have a wee go in bsb or wsb or are the too close too !
Here's reality, Casey Stoner has the fastest bike, but he is about the sixth or seventh best rider in Moto Gp. Rossi is riding the wheels of the Yamaha, where was Colon Edwards on his home country's track ?
I wish Nicky Hayden was riding Stoner's Ducati. He wouldn't crash his championship away... this will not be the last of Stoner driving into the sandtrap. He should be yelling "FORE" instead of whining about Rossi.
Brimo
It was a fair race. Casey's only 22 and has had a sheltered life - he'll mature with experience. Leave off his wife - she's a cute girl and looks great in jeans. Good to see some proper racing rather than the usual sh1te.
On the RTE Sports site (irish TV), there is a quote from Valentino where he says this,
But in an interview with Corriere dello Sport Rossi dismissed Stoner's comments about the unfairness of certain moves
'On the podium he told me that he'd lost respect for me because he's been racing for many years and he doesn't remember ever having a race like that,' said the Italian.
'Well if he's been racing for many years, I've been racing for a lifetime and I don't know who he's been racing against but I remember all my races being like that and my rivals always fought that way.'
'He's used to the mentality of racing at the front with a four second advantage over the field but racing shoulder-to-shoulder brings other factors into play,' said Rossi.
'Hence this time I won and I'm happy.'
Rossi also said that he felt his move at Cavatappi was his best of all time.
'It's difficult to classify races especially as this season I've had many back and forth battles,' he said.
'But for sure this was one of my best five victories because Stoner is a tough cookie.
'And the pass at Cavatappi was the best of my career; he barely braked on the bend and me even less so, so little in fact that my wheels touched the gravel.'
Oi Fontane007, when yov've got the balls to get the other side of the wall and open the throttle when the lights go out then you have got an opinion, until then you haven't, When the lights change IT'S WAR no if's, no but's, Rossi showed this bleedin pretender that the only way forward was to attack and thats precisely what he did, did you notice on lap 9 stoner tried to push on Rossi but he just laughed it off, and yes his wife is Pig ugly, 11
Well said Bozzy, give him some real competition and he'd have to buy cleanex out before he stopped whinging. He's okay when he's winning by half a post code but no good when the riding gets close!!!! Whinger!!!
His dad said if winning the championship changed him he'd kick his ass for him, well that times come, give him one for me Mr. Stoner senior!!!!!
I cant believe some of you guys!
First of all lets remember how boring it had been before Stoner came along, with Rossi seeming to win year in year out with little or no competition.
We as viewers are finally seeing a great competition between two excellent riders and any true fan should be thankful for that.
Secondly, I reckon Stoner WAS crying crying sour grapes a little after the race but you've got to remember that he's a winner and was obviously angry for losing also that he still lacks experience and was probably not used to being beaten up in the way that Rossi did to him, also he knows he made a mistake that stopped him from any chance when he lost concentration and came off.
Dont get me wrong, I'm no big Stoner fan but lets not just jump on him, just because he's not as big a character in the sport as Rossi is.
Finally, the plonker who wrote in about his wife being pig-ugly, please get a life!!
Cheers.
Let's face it, if Stoner came to mallory park opn a cold march morning and had a five year old R6 with a a few go faster bits on it he would not get his breath at a 6 lap club race sprint, I have done this for years and It is very rare I come home from one of these weekends without bruises on arms and legs and different colour marks of paint on the fairings from all 32 of us on the grid going for that one line through the bus stop, Rossi gave this lad a good lesson in race tactics and racecraft, he now knows that just having a fast bike is not the answer, Him and his bloody pig ugly wife had the smiles wiped off their faces when it was over, Well stoner GET USED TO IT !!!!
because the lessons have only just begun, Ask Gibernau, Biaggi etc !!!!!
