Lee Martin marked his call-up to the Manchester United first team by scoring the winner in a 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates in a Vodacom Challenge match.
The midfielder, on loan at Sheffield United last season, found the target at the Absa Stadium in the 23rd minute.
Martin reacted quickly after Fraizer Campbell flicked the ball on, the 21-year-old applying a cool finish.
It was no more than United deserved against an enthusiastic but limited Pirates side, coached by former Dutch star Rudi Krol.
Andriy Voronin had a second-half penalty saved but Liverpool maintained their unbeaten record so far in pre-season with a draw against Hertha Berlin.
In front of 51,641 fans in Berlin's Olympic Stadium, Liverpool's starting line-up included just three players who could consider themselves first choice come the start of the season.
But they showed enough effort, fitness and strength - particularly at the back - to encourage boss Rafael Benitez.
The visitors should have scored after 49 minutes after Andriy Voronin was pulled down in the box by Kaka, who was tugging his shirt, but the Ukrainian striker saw his spot-kick saved by Christian Fiedler.
Cicero saw a downward header saved well by Diego Cavalieri, who was then replaced by Martin, with Jack Hobbs, Dirk Kuyt, Spearing and Yossi Benayoun all getting second-half run-outs.
Theo Walcott responded to Arsene Wenger's call to arms but Arsenal could only draw 1-1 with Hungarian outfit Szombathelyi Haladas at the Haladas VSE Stadium.
The hosts took a deserved lead in the 25th minute when former Hungary international striker Krisztian Kenesei broke through a static Gunners defence and chipped delicately over the on-rushing Manuel Almunia.
Justin Hoyte believed he had hooked the ball clear on the line but he was over-ruled by the assistant referee.
To rub salt into the defender's wounds, he then sliced a volley over from five yards just minutes later with the goal gaping.
But Arsenal equalised in the 42nd minute when Walcott - urged by manager Wenger to stake his claim for a regular place this season - rifled the ball home.
The former Southampton forward collected Nicklas Bendtner's short pass and, from a position to the right of goal, slammed an 18-yard low shot across the goalkeeper and into the back of the net off the far post.
An inexperienced Arsenal team struggled create chances after the break although Gael Clichy fired a free-kick narrowly over with 12 minutes left.
Wigan slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in their second of three pre-season friendlies in Austria.
They fell behind when Greece midfielder Ioannis Amanatidis converted Christoph Spycher's cross in the 16th minute.
Worse was to follow five minutes before half-time when Titus Bramble, standing on the goalline, could not prevent Markus Steinhofer's effort from the edge of the penalty area finding the net.
New signings Daniel de Ridder and Olivier Kapo both featured, the Dutch winger playing an hour with the Frenchman coming on for the last 30 minutes.
Stoke were defeated 1-0 by a solitary strike from Greek star Angelos Charisteas in their friendly against FC Nurnberg in Stainach, Austria.
The 28-year old, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2004 final against Portugal, clinically fired past Steve Simonsen just after the half-hour.
Goalkeeper Simonsen produced a number of saves to keep the German side, relegated from the Bundesliga, at bay.
Glenn Whelan and Jon Parkin went closest for Tony Pulis' side, while new £5.5million striker Dave Kitson had a lively 45 minutes before being replaced at half-time.
