Melandri: Ducati could axe me

Eurosport - Tue, 22 Jul 12:12:00 2008

Marco Melandri admits he does not know whether he will still be a Ducati rider at the next MotoGP race in the Czech Republic on August 17.

2008 Ducati Marco Melandri - 0

The Italian has endured a miserable season, languishing in 17th in the rider standings while his team-mate Casey Stoner competes for the world championship.

Having already agreed to cancel his contract for 2009, Melandri said he could be replaced sooner after failing to finish in the points in the US MotoGP at Laguna Seca.

"I'm just waiting to see what I have to do. I have a contract with Ducati until the end of the year," he said.

"I'm a Ducati rider. If they want to stop with me then I have to do what they want, so I just have to wait."

Melandri said he was disappointed with his result in California, having worked his way from 15th on the grid to 9th, only to crash.

"I hit a marker or something going into turn one and my hand came off the handlebar, so I couldn't get the bike turned," said Melandri, who remounted to finish 16th.

"I took a heavy blow to my hand in the crash and needed a couple of laps to get back into the race because I wasn't sure how bad the injury was. The pain started to subside eventually but I was way back, lapping alone.

"I'm disappointed because after the first two or three laps I had a good pace together. It's a shame because it's another potentially good result ruined.

"I'm particularly sorry for the team because they have made a fantastic job and they deserved a good result."

  1. I am both a Ducati and a Melandri fan, so it this year's pair, was a biggest disappointment for me. They simply didn't match. And as their relationship is OK, it will be better for them to stop it at the end of the season, and... please Ducati... don't make any hasty moves!
    Futhermore:
    1. It seems that Rossi's fans forget too easily about his own "complains" when other riders where aggressive on him! I even wonder how their reaction will be if STONER falls on one of the poor back riders by his own mistake and takes him out of race. Will they still be saying "that's racing"?
    2. It is ridiculous to see things written about DUCATI such as "a bike built around Stoner"! I think it was HONDA who built the whole MotoGP new 800cc regulations so that they can built a bike around their puppet rider, Pedrosa! And we DO see LESS spectacular racing the past 2 years because of that.

  2. Why would Ducati (or anyone else for that matter) want to sign Haydon? He has proved time & again he cannot run the race pace & his championship was won on consistent points scoring & Rossi's bad luck. If a team wants to win don't sign Hayden( nice guy tho' he is) would be my advice.

  3. Can everyone stop pinning Stoner's title on his bike....I think Melandri has proven it, that it was Stoner, and not the bike that was largely responsible for the title....

  4. I think by now, it is clear to everyone....WEST out at Kawasaki, MELANDRI in....Giberneu in at Ducati....Maybe on an ALICE bike with Guintoli moving to Ducati Marlboro.....

  5. I have always been a huge fan of Marco Melandri and still am but it's just so disheartening at the moment seeing the poor chap struggling riding a bike built around Casey Stoner. Marco has proved himself to be one of the top riders and definitely one of the toughest riders.

I really hope that he can get a great ride for next year and that people don't judge him on what has happened this season. The guy has talent and is as brave as they come. I really think Ducati should not bring Sete back in - Valentino has messed with his head and he's just not up to the job.

Like others, I couldn't believe how much Casey whinged on Sunday and was speechless - if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. Marco would have relished a scrap like that with Vale (anyone remember Donington the other year when they had a great fight?)

So, all in all, let's just hope there's happier times ahead for Marco - I'll still believe in him.

  6. ROSSI WON BRILLIANTLY AT LAGUNA THROUGH GREATER EXPERIENCE AND RACECRAFT, HOWEVER STONER WILL WIN THE TITLE AS HE HAS THE FASTER BIKE AND KNOWING HE ALREADY BEAT ROSSI LAST YEAR. HOPE ITS A CLOSE FINISH THOUGH . NO DIRTY TACTICS PLEASE!!!

  10. people this has nothing to do with stoner or rossi!! read what your commenting on before writing!!! marco did a great job on the honda last year. this is the guy who finished 3rd at laguna last year after damaging his ankle. i feel so sorry for the guy, he deserves a break. if nicky really is the next choice for ducati then maybe marco should be given a shot at factory honda. everyone knows he can ride a honda!!

  12. I feel sorry for Marco, he's got more bottle than the average dairy but just can't ride a bike built for Stoner. Someone give him a good ride and give him his confidence back, he'll pay you back in spades.

  13. Let's face it, if Stoner came to mallory park opn a cold march morning and had a five year old R6 with a a few go faster bits on it he would not get his breath at a 6 lap club race sprint, I have done this for years and It is very rare I come home from one of these weekends without bruises on arms and legs and different colour marks of paint on the fairings from all 32 of us on the grid going for that one line through the bus stop, Rossi gave this lad a good lesson in race tactics and racecraft, he now knows that just having a fast bike is not the answer, Him and his bloody pig ugly wife had the smiles wiped off their faces when it was over, Well stoner GET USED TO IT !!!!
because the lessons have only just begun, Ask Gibernau, Biaggi etc !!!!!

  14. As i remember Istanbul 07 Rossi admited making a mistake and running wide and choosing the wrong tyre and thought that Elias was dangerous altering his line in turns, as many others complained about last season. But ok, we'll call it evidence of a tantrum. I'd like to counter that with evidence of Stoner tantrums. See every practice session or race this year and most from last year.

  15. Hey Rossi spits when when some one shakes his pram... See istanbal 2007 when he was rightly dusted by elias... He doesnt like it when he gets what he dishes out. I wonder why....?

  16. I hope that Melandri gets a good ride for next year. his talent deserves it.
I also hope that Ducati don't replace Melandri with Sete Gibernau. Stoner throwing his toys out of the pram when he loses is bad enough, imagine the old whinge master himself Gibernau joining in the hissy fits. Mind you though, watching Rossi stuffing both Stoner and Gibernau would be great.
