New Zealand skipper Richie McCaw could make his comeback from an ankle injury in Saturday's Tri-Nations clash with Australia.

The world's leading openside (pictured) picked up the injury in the second Test against England last month and missed both Tri-Nations games with South Africa, which ended in one victory for each side.

McCaw was initially expected to be sidelined for six weeks, but after taking a full part in All Blacks training on Monday the 27-year-old could return to the back row for the Bledisloe Cup clash in Sydney.

The news will come as a huge boost for All Blacks coach Graham Henry after his side saw their 30-match unbeaten home run ended with a defeat in the second Test against the Springboks 10 days ago.

It will also give New Zealand added strength at the breakdown against Australia openside George Smith.

Veteran Smith was in outstanding form last weekend when the Wallabies inflicted a surprise 16-9 defeat on world champions South Africa.

If he does play, McCaw will come up against his former coach at Crusaders Robbie Deans, now in charge of the Wallabies.

Australia lock Dan Vickerman is also close to an international recall after playing two games for club side Sydney University following an ankle injury.
