Serbia lead from start to finish as Nikola Grbic starred for the hosts including scoring the winning point with a smash as they wrapped up the 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 victory.

The USA will need to beat Russia when they meet on Thursday, if they are to stay in the competition.

Cuba had to work hard against Argentina but eventually triumphed 3-1 in the opening match of the round.

Cuba took advantage of a slow start by Argentina to take the opening set 25-22 before Argentina re-grouped to take the second by the same score.

But Cuba took the lead once again by winning the third 26-24 after a topsy-turvy set that saw the lead change hands four times before a similar story in the fourth, which they also won 26-24, saw them complete the win.
