Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez already has his sights set on the Carling Cup final as his team prepare for their opening test against Leeds.
Benitez is eyeing the showpiece at Wembley on February 28, considering it is a competition he has not won and this is his sixth tilt at the trophy.
Liverpool's team for the clash at Elland Road, which has been the stage for several memorable clashes between the teams down the years, is likely to show many changes as Benitez gives his fringe players a chance to impress against the League One leaders.
The former Valencia coach, whose Reds team went close to winning the competition in 2005 when they lost 3-2 to Chelsea, said: "We will try to manage the squad for the match and use some different players.
"But we want to win and get to the final. In my first season we got to the Carling Cup final and were winning with 10 minutes to go before we conceded an own goal.
"I would like to go to the final again and make amends for that defeat."

Big clubs target premiership titles, fa cup finals, champions league finals, carling cup should only be an added bonus for big clubs, not the seasons main target. This just tells me Rafa has no belief and confidence in his side winning a major title or cup thus targeting the carling cup instead lol
MOT! Liverpool, put out your youth team and concentrate on the league to shut those manc scum up. SUPER LEEDS!

Sorry guys but Gerrard and Torres will leave eventually whether you win everything or not over however many years and for however many years. BUT tonight back to the good old days. Can you even come to Yorkshire and win? I doubt it!
Best of luck for the game today,

Vítor, he is not thinking of winning it. He is targeting the final. According to him, it would be a great thing if he reaches the final of the carliung cup. ha ha ha. He forgot to think of winning the EPL which he never won. ha ha ha. He is soooo funny. Can't stop laughing. ha ha ha. Liverpool's biggest aim this season is the carling cup. ha ha ha ha.
BENITEZ SAID THAT BECAUSE HE KNOWS THE CARLING CUP MIGHT BE THE ONLY PIECE OF SILVERWARE LIVERPOOL CAN WIN THIS SEASON!

Dont blame it on Alonso, dont blame it on carra, dont blame it on hammam, blame it on traore, he just cant control his feet - to the tune of blame it on the boogie
he wants to win this cup coz it is the only 1 he hasnt won!! how many other managers or teams can say that?
noob heds, obviously he will still be goin for the champions league, sum ppl r so thick
What rant? If he'd have said nah not interested in this one, you would have slaughtered him but because he want's to win it you slaughter him! WTF. By the way we love him so he'll be in the job for some time yet.
Isn't this the same cup that Benitez dismissed a few years ago saying he was only interested in the EPL and European cup?
I think so, Rafa. What a way to admit that you know you and your team are not good enough to win the big ones. His rantings never fail to amaze me, how much longer can he keep his job?
COME ON THE MIGHTY WHITES AND SMASH THESE SCUMBAGS BACK THE THE @#$% BANKS OF THE MERSEY THEY SO LOVE !!
Nice to see Benitez realising that the Carling Cup is the best he can achieve this season. FINALLY realising that his team are average. God help him if Torres or Gerrard get injured.
