Former Argentina coach Alfio Basile will continue in charge of Boca Juniors despite a run of poor results that includes defeats in their last three matches.

Basile, whose team were upset 3-2 at home by Godoy Cruz on Sunday taking his tally in his second spell at Boca to one win and three draws in seven matches, had handed in his resignation after the match.

"After the meeting held by the (club) directors, Basile was ratified as xeneize trainer," Boca said on their official website, using their Genoese dialect nickname.

The gruff 65-year-old, who skipped the post-match news conference at Boca's Bombonera stadium, resigned puzzled at his difficulties to make the team gel.

Basile had quit the Argentina job a year ago after a similar string of poor results in World Cup qualifiers.

Boca are 13th in the Apertura championship with five points from five matches and eight off the pace. They were eliminated last week from the Copa Sudamericana, South America's equivalent of the Europa League.

Basile returned to Boca in July amid euphoria that he could repeat his previous spell at the club from 2005 to 2006, when they won two league titles and the Copa Sudamericana.
