Premier League - Paper Round: City slam Wiley

Eurosport - Tue, 22 Sep 09:01:00 2009

A round-up of today's newspaper stories with Manchester City set to complain to the FA over the behaviour of fourth official Alan Wiley in their heated derby on the weekend.

FOOTBALL Mark Hughes Manchester City - 0

City are furious with Wiley for laughing with Sir Alex Ferguson while brushing aside manager Mark Hughes's queries over the amount of added time at the end of the classic encounter at Old Trafford, The Sun reports.

In addition to the Eastlands club's fury with Wiley, Hughes has accused Gary Neville of "running around like a lunatic" - antics which could land Manchester United's club captain in trouble with the FA.

In the same paper, Darren Fletcher believes United have confounded their critics to send their season into overdrive.

"Everyone has been writing us off and the lads have responded. We have proved people wrong," he told the paper.

On the other side of the coin, the Mirror have referees' chief Keith Hackett and former World Cup final referee Jack Taylor insisting that Sunday's official Martin Atkinson was correct in allowing seven minutes of added time.

The Guardian reveal that United get more injury time when they need it, with the paper reporting that the Premier League champions benefit from an imbalanced allocation when they need a goal.

The paper state that an extra minute, on average, is added for United when they are not leading a match, compared to when they are in front, adding the facts to prove their case.

An average of 191 seconds of stoppage time are added when United are winning a match at Old Trafford, while 257 extra seconds are provided when they are not holding the ascendancy.

John Cross from the Mirror outlines the 'defensive crisis' at Tottenham with Jonathan Woodgate reportedly suffering a further setback to deepen Harry Redknapp's injury woes.

The Spurs boss will be without all four of his centre-halves for the club's Carling Cup trip to Preston and Ledley King could be out for up to a month with his hamstring strain.

The Express report that Nigel Reo-Coker has apologised profusely to Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill and the midfielder is waiting to see if he is handed a reprieve this week.

Reo-Coker was sent home from training last week after an ugly bust-up with O'Neill and the former West Ham man is apparently waiting with baited breath to discover his fate after "a miserable weekend".

Meanwhile, Peter Kenyon has broken his silence over his shock exit from Chelsea by backing himself and insisting that he has done everything right in building up the club's profile.

"When we joined, the two clubs that had constantly won the Premier League were Manchester United and Arsenal. Chelsea broke that cartel," Kenyon said.

One senses the Blues chief executive is gaining this abundance of publicity with a view to his 'next challenge', and Mick Dennis of the same paper is scathing about Kenyon's attitude.

Dennis says it is "good riddance" that the former United man is leaving, arguing that Kenyon's Chelsea 'care little about the truth.'

"Now that he (Kenyon) is going, it might be possible to like that great club again," Dennis wrote.

The Daily Mail have the back page headline: 'Hitting back', with Manchester City full-back Javier Garrido accusing neighbours United of creating a 'climate of hostility'.

The Spaniard suffered a head wound when he was struck by a coin during the explosive derby and he was less than enamoured by the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

"We received insults on the bench all through the match but I never would have thought that situations like this would happen at a stadium like Old Trafford. Really, it is sad," he said.

Finally, Patrick Barclay of The Times reported a "fitting farewell to a man loved by young and old" at the service of thanksgiving in tribute to Sir Bobby Robson.

"There were tears and smiles as the great and the good came to pay their final, warm respects to a hero of the people," Barclay wrote.

  1. Sorry Sparky, trying to justify Bellamy's behaviour is nothing short of irresponsible. Fully accept that the idiot should not have been on the pitch but that no way explains the stupid response from Bellamy. For Mark Hughes to say that Belamy was defending himself is plainly rubbish. The 'fan' was being restrained by the stewards and Bellamy could be clearly seen to have moved towards the bloke before giving one of his all too familiar 'slaps'. All this from a player who throughout his carrer has been noted for his aggresion and lack of discipline. Trying to protect your players is credible but not when the behaviour is clearly wrong and damaging to the reputation of the game. Bellamy should be given a seriously long ban in the hope that this sends a strong message to others who can't restrain themselves and learn to accept defeat gracefully!
