Black Cats through at a canter

Tue, 22 Sep 22:46:56 2009

Jordan Henderson and Fraizer Campbell opened their Sunderland accounts as the Black Cats beat Birmingham 2-0 in the third round of the Carling Cup.

The 19-year-old midfielder and the £6million striker had the game sewn up within 23 first-half minutes as a much-changed City side offered little resistance in front of a crowd of just 20,576 at the Stadium of Light.

They might have won even more comfortably had Maik Taylor not denied Kenwyne Jones with his legs, or had defender John Mensah's 57th-minute strike not been chalked off for a foul.

Sunderland were ahead within four minutes, Henderson sweeping home his first senior goal for the club from Jones' square ball to set the tone for a blitz which the visitors found irresistible.

It was 2-0 with 23 minutes gone when Campbell, who had already seen a close-range header deflected over by defender Giovanny Espinoza, made amends, beating Taylor to Andy Reid's inviting cross to glance the ball home.

To their credit, the visitors rallied briefly immediately after the restart, but it did not last, and they might have fallen further behind in a flurry of activity in the 53rd minute. First former Middlesbrough defender Stuart Parnaby had to get in a good block to keep out Reid's driven effort, and then Taylor had to pluck Lorik Cana's curling shot out of his top corner.

  6. Don't laugh too much Jack, next season you will be with us, another couple of bad results and you will be wishing Brucie had of taken the Toon job. But then again, Mackem fans are easily pleased (what there is of them) So you's will be happy with whatever Quinn gives you. So come on Black & White Bruce, get the Mackems back home to the championship where they belong and you will be a true hero to the Geordies.

  9. yvonne those teams you mention are the bread and butter of premiership survival and if your NUFC had done better against those teams last season they'd still be in the premiership. If a team is not one of the big 4 they don't expect to get anything against them,a point is like a win,so what if we got beat off Chelsea,we probabley will 19 times out of 20,but we'll get worried when it's teams in the bottom 10 that are stuffing us,you know like Peterborough and Blackpool in your league ha ha

  10. Yvonne,
who have you beat, Bolton, Blackburn & Hull, beaten by Burnley, Stoke and humiliated off Chelsea, you must be dreading November & December when you play some of the regular premiership teams.

I think you will find that all the teams in your list bar Burnley, are "regular premiership teams" Fact. And the Chelsea humiliation you keep bleating on about, which ever team you claim to support(although we no already)Fact!!! would suffer the same fate, if not worse-assuming your not a Man utd or Liverpool fan today.

  13. hey yvonne when I sat down I thought we must be playing Acrington Stanley instead, they brought about 12 supporters . . .first time I've been at a match and never heard the away crowd at all for the whole game. The Mags are obsessed about our crowd sizes this is a good sign for us as it means our team are not getting critisised as they are doing so well. So come on all u mags keep telling us how small our crowds are and that we have no airport because u know what? we don't give a s hit cos we got a great football team ha ha

  14. Happy days indeed, Jack (post 3). One point though, t' airport (as they say in Yorkshire) - it's not there's, its ours as in our respective Councils (Durham County, Sunderland, South Tyneside, Gateshead, North Tyneside as well as Newcastle) have a stake in it. Also, the Tyne Bridge, High Level Bridge, Millenium Bridge and the River Tyne are no there's, they share them with Gateshead! As for the Sage, Baltic, Hilton Hotel and the Angel of the North, they're all in Gateshead!! FACTS which the usual culprits always fail to remember. (And as a Low Fell resident, when not at Uni, I'm very proud of this.) Roll on Christmas is all I can say so I can watch the Lads live, York City just don't cut the mustard for me.

  18. Brum were never in the game from the first minute to the last, our defence was fantastic all night.Should of been 3-4 by half time, still not sure what the ref saw to see our 3rd cancelled. No doubt we'll here the usual diatribe from the Mags ie you had a small crowd,Brum put out a weakened side,we are concentrating on the league hence our humiliation at the hands of the Posh,we have an airport blah blah blah, when really all that's pertinant is that we are through to the 4th round and they are not, happy days!!!!

  20. good work like result but Birmingham were a little disappointing to say the least.
Defnce looked good with Da Silva and Mensah in and J henderson took his goal well as Did Campbell, hopefully this will give him some confidence For Wolves on Sunday.
