Southend winger Damian Scannell is to undergo a scan to determine the extent of an ankle injury he sustained in a reserve-team outing earlier in the week.

Scannell was substituted just 20 minutes into the game against Wycombe's second string on Tuesday night and expects to be ruled out of Saturday's clash at Carlisle.

The 24-year-old has endured a frustrating start to the season, suffering from swine flu as well as being sidelined with a knee problem.

He told the club's official website: "At the moment it certainly doesn't look good for the game at the weekend at Carlisle.

"But we will have to wait and see what the scan shows before we know for certain."
