Stoke City defender Robert Huth has been handed a three-match ban for violent conduct following Saturday's match against West Ham.
The German centre-back struck Hammers defender Matthew Upson with his forearm while defending a free-kick during the Potters' 2-1 win at the Britannia Stadium.
Upson - who scored West Ham's goal in that match - had earlier sustained a cut to the face after he was caught by Ryan Shawcross's stray boot, and Huth's blow re-opened the wound.
At the time, referee Martin Atkinson missed the incident that would have left him with little choice other than to show Huth a red card.
However, the FA's regulatory commission handed the 25-year-old the ban, ruling him out of Premier League matches against Tottenham and Wolves as well as the Carling Cup trip to Portsmouth.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis said: "We have spoken to Robert and he knows what we feel. His reaction was poor and it could have cost us the game.
"Upson wasn't even looking at the ball as he blocked Robert off, but players have to retain their discipline in those situations, whatever the provocation is."
The club had earlier in the week issued an apology, stressing that Huth had only received one red card - for two bookings - in eight years as a Premier League player.

Huth deserves praising... im sick of the way West Ham players dive round .....there was a 2 footed high tackle on lawrence that went unpunished because the guy had already had a yellow card in the first half......
Before hitting out at huth watch the match and you'll see more bad behaviour....
Oh yea and i noticed no one comments on the disgraceful west ham fans.... which resulted in a stoke steward being stabbed....
West Ham are a disgrace and i hope they go bump
he should not be allowed wear that shirt ever agen ... the german nob .. we dont want things like that as a stoke player .. so leave him out or sell him
Whether or not Upson was blocking him what Huth did was disgusting. Appaling. FA is doing the right thing by getting involved to ensure other players don't think they can get away with these acts. Ade got the ban and now this guy. Well done FA. Video Ref could certainly sort these issues out. West Ham could've drawed or won provided the ref would've red carded him so its important fa considers vid ref.
Why haven't the police brought charges for common assault?

This is bull Im not a stoke or west ham fan so im completly nuetral, So what he whacked the guy who was clearly blocking him, Football has turned into a fairy sport with players rolling around the floor holding their faces when someone stands on their foot or crying off for 3weeks for bruised shins,These boys get paid more than enough to take a bit of rough game now and again. Ok he should have owned up straight away to the ref and say yeah i wacked him but he had been blocking me from marking my man say he understood that he shouldn't have done it but a moment af madness just came over him and ask the ref to have a word and sort it out, End of yellow card free kick to west ham shake the guys hand and back too it, The FA is getting too involved in matters like this it could have been sorted behind closed doors with an apoligy to Upson but instead they get blow it out of preportion and stoke suffer now being a defender down for 3games.
stoke should buy this players:bale(tottenham) or traore(arsenal),malbranque and tainio(sunderland),petrov(man city),ashton(west ham),benjani(man city).this players will help so much to stoke to go to europe league next year.do this stoke
yes he deserves his ban and will take it(metaphorically) on the chin. Wilko will comfortably replace him and the potters will go marching on.
another dirty german c.u.n.t just like ballack another dirty kraut muppet who evra will be chopping in half for his forearm smash to his throat in the charity shield
Good.He deserves it.
He's always been a thug, but his ban is too late for my team
Not that I condone Huth's actions but Upson was clearly blocking him (something that is against regulations and has recently had special emphasis put on it). What punishment is Upson going to get?
bloody cheating stoke chopper. lol
thats goods....
spurs to score more than expected now...
bloody good in all discracful behaviour from huth
HE DESERVES IT!! PERIOD.
