Gers slam 'disgusting' abuse

Rangers have condemned the "moronic behaviour" of supporters alleged to have racially abused Maurice Edu after Tuesday night's Champions League thrashing by Unirea Urziceni.

United States midfielder Edu, 23, played no part in the 4-1 Group G defeat but watched the match at Ibrox and says he was targeted by his own club's supporters as he left the stadium.

A statement released by the Ibrox club read: "Rangers Football Club condemns out of hand this moronic behaviour. The action of this individual is disgusting and completely unacceptable."

It continued: "It is extremely disappointing that people such as this attach themselves to the wider Rangers support and tarnish the image of the club and its fans.

"The club will now undertake a full investigation to identify the individual in question and take appropriate action.

"We would urge anyone who has information on the identity of the individual responsible to contact the club immediately.

"Everyone associated with Rangers will once again demonstrate their on-going commitment to Show Racism the Red Card as we support the Weekend of Action at the Hibernian game at Ibrox Stadium on Saturday."

Edu wrote a message on his Twitter feed which read: "Not sure what hurt more: result last nite or being racially abused by couple of r own fans as I'm getting in my car."

The Rangers Supporters Trust condemned anyone who might have abused Edu, who has been out all season with a knee injury.

RST spokesman David Edgar told Press Association Sport: "We would absolutely condemn that if that's the case. These are not Rangers fans and they should be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

  1. Doesn't surprise me. Rangers fans are more interested in bigotry and abuse than watching a game of footy!

  3. I'm not sure that GBS would treat it as such, however, you, all too evidently, inhabit a world of self-delusion so devise your own interpreation.
Nobody could accuse you of not being prolific but it is debatable that we need ever more bull manure.

  6. to all rangers fans, check the winners and losers article, you managed to keep your team out of the losers section as you got their place with your racist comments, time this club done the decent thing and folded for humanitarian reasons.

  8. keep it in perspective? this is the club who never signed a Catholic for a hundred years, and i think it's time Celtic fans stopped using the term the old firm, they should not be associated with rangers in any way or form, yes Celtic have their problems same as any club, but rangers have been openly bigoted for years, now they have the cheek to point the finger of blame at some poor fan because they know the world is watching now, sorry rangers, fans keying their own players cars, racially abusing their own players and now the club that never signed a Catholic for a hundred years wants to distance itself from these people, how high and mighty, AND HYPOCRITICAL.

  13. Keep it in perspective, it was one person and there is no guarantee he was a real supporter, just because he was loitering outside Ibrox on the evening of a match. I know the fact that Edu was racially abused is a great opportunity for Celtic fans to get tore in, but this abuse is not the message from all real Rangers fans.

  20. neil.thomas89 I am sure you are not talking about Celtic as we have no hisotry of religious hatred...say what you want in regards to our ALLEGED links with Irish nationalist groups...which is political. Only Rangers have a real hisotry of biggotry what with not signing or hiring a Catholic for years (I know Mo wasn't the first, but they're were few and far between)
