Jenas: Robinson has my support

Jermaine Jenas has backed Tottenham team-mate Paul Robinson to bounce back from disappointment and force his way back into the England side.Robinson was dropped for the final two games of Steve McClaren's reign as England boss and was not even on the bench for the disastrous defeat to Croatia at Wembley, a result of his loss of form for club and country.

High-profile blunders starting last season have seen the 28-year-old goalkeeper under intense scrutiny but Jenas believes Robinson has what it takes to emerge from the first crisis of his career.

"People have been looking closely at Robbo this year, but he is big enough and strong enough to deal with it, so I am sure he will be fine," said Jenas.

"He wanted to be involved, like every player left out. He's a top keeper and I'm sure he will be fighting for his place again."

Scott Carson took over from Robinson in goal for McClaren and made an error for Croatia's opener, with defeat meaning England will not be at Euro 2008.

"I wasn't really surprised by it (McClaren's decision)," said Jenas. "I know Scott, he's a top player and has a great future ahead of him."

Robinson's form has been part of Spurs' poor start to the season and they go to West Ham on Sunday looking to edge closer to mid-table.

"As a team we haven't performed to what we know we can," Jenas said. "Robbo knows he can do better, as all the players know. Any problems we have as a team we deal with together. There's been no finger pointing.

"I've watched Robbo in training and he's been working very hard. In the last couple of games he's got better and better and is back to what we know he is."

Jenas is among the English players at White Hart Lane looking to force their way into the plans of whoever the new England boss will be.

The 24-year-old, along with Aaron Lennon and Michael Dawson, lost their place in McClaren's final squads, while Darren Bent only received a late call-up for the Croatia game.

"The formula for that is doing well at club level," Jenas said. "As the results start coming at Tottenham and we start progressing in competitions and the league, I think we'll see the natural development of players who have been left out getting themselves back into the fold.

"The players for England over the last few years have earned their place and it is up to the likes of myself, Aaron, Daws and the other lads at Spurs to push and take those places away from them."
