Robson calls for ex-manager panel

Former England captain Bryan Robson believes ex-national team bosses such as Sir Bobby Robson should be involved in the England manager hunt.England are searching for a new manager in the wake of Steve McClaren's dismissal by the Football Association after Wednesday night's 3-2 defeat by Croatia ended their hopes of reaching the finals of Euro 2008.

Robson, now managing Sheffield United, believes the likes of Robson should play a part in recruiting a replacement.

He told Sky Sports News: "I feel people like Sir Bobby Robson, Graham Taylor, Terry Venables - ex-managers - if they are not in the running for the job I just feel there should be a little panel of them actually help the committee decide who should be the England manager."

The former Manchester United midfielder also agrees with the FA's pledge to undertake a review after their failure to qualify.

"When you miss out on a major competition, you can't just dismiss it," he added.

"You've got to have a good, hard look at yourself."

Much has been made of England's inferior technique compared to their opponents but Robson believes there needs to be a balance with aggression.

"Academies are a good thing in the game but I do think they are losing a bit of aggression," said Robson.

"We keep talking about technique and that side of the game. I think you need to get a balance of technique and aggression and I just looked at some of our defending in last night's game and I thought it was poor for an England side.

"We stood off (Niko) Kranjcar for the first goal, for the second people got attracted to the ball and didn't stop with the runner and for me that is poor defending and this is our best players in the country."
