Eurosport - Thu, 22 Nov 17:48:00 2007

The world and his wife have had their say on England's 3-2 defeat to Croatia which led to their elimination from Euro 2008. We separate the wheat from the chaff.

FOOTBALL 2007 pre-season Sunderland Roy Keane - 0

Sunderland manager Roy Keane: "I tend to think there are too many egos in there, too many big heads. If you get carried way with a little bit of success then you are in trouble. You look at the England set up and they don't appear to be a happy bunch. I don't think international football is that important to a lot of these players these days and club football has taken over."

England stand-in captain Steven Gerrard: "From the player's point of view, we've got to take the criticism, get on with it and try to bounce back but it's going to hurt for a long time. But this is my biggest disappointment in international football and it would be wrong to make excuses for what has happened. That's the easy way out. As players we've got to take responsibility. We got back into the game and their third goal was disappointing. Scott (Carson) is obviously disappointed. He knows he's made a mistake. But he's a young lad and he's got a bright future."

England captain John Terry: "On behalf of all of the players, we are hugely disappointed with what's happened. To come back to 2-2, we were so close. We take collective responsibility. There are many things when you look back on the campaign. It's disappointing for ourselves, our families, the fans and everyone in England. It's going to be a huge loss without us there in the Euros. I'm just lost for words at the minute. I can't explain the way we are feeling in the dressing room. It's not just Steve (McClaren), it's the players. We are the ones going out there performing and not getting the right results."

Former England manager Steve McClaren: "It is an indescribable pain. There is so much expectation, both from the fans in the stadium and the people watching on TV at home. We have let them down. We know what they are feeling - we are feeling exactly the same. I take responsibility. Ultimately, I said judge me over 12 games. We deserve to be where we finish and we have not deserved to qualify. That is my responsibility. I don't think it was a mistake to play Scott (Carson) I thought he was ready and I stick by that. The conditions were difficult and the ball took a wicked dip. He made a fantastic save to keep us in the game at the start of the second half. Ultimately, on a pitch like that there was going to be mistakes. We made too many."

Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick: "I'm obviously very disappointed. I would like to apologise to the fans personally. This has never been just a job to me - I am in it because I care about football, football fans and football teams. I look at the FA this year and, off the field, we have made significant progress and success but I recognise that to the public, how England play and how far they go is what they really measure the FA by."

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic: "There is nothing wrong with England football. This is by far the most difficult group. There were three teams who deserved to go through to the European Championship. I read in the papers that no Croatian player would start in your team. That's ridiculous. Wake up. I love your players. They are jumbo jets of football but we are players in a small country who can play good football. We have players with great skill and good lungs."

Russia coach Guus Hiddink: "I am very surprised England didn't get at least get a draw, although Croatia are a good team. We had two draws against Croatia, they are a very experienced team with very experienced players, but nevertheless, I am very surprised they won."

Premier League chairman Sir David Richards: "You cannot keep turning to the Premier League and saying it is the Premier League's fault we have not got loads and loads of fantastic players. We would be the first to admit there is something wrong with the system. We need to look at why we have not got the best kids in the world."

Football Association chairman Geoff Thompson: "Of course, we feel embarrassed. We expect as a major nation in Europe to qualify for the European Championships and World Cups. We are embarrassed and disappointed, like all fans."

England managerial candidate Jose Mourinho: "This is sad, a big loss for European football. I was always a supporter of the England national team and England's clubs. A European championships without England is not the same as one with them."

Reading manager Steve Coppell: "Everybody is very disappointed about last night. It means we don't take part in the European Championships next year but it may well be the catalyst for a change within English football. Inevitably a review is going to be held and they might actually do something about it. We need to do something just to make sure the England team takes part in these big tournaments."
