FOOTBALL 2006-2007 Premiership Newcastle United Sam Allardyce - 0

Allardyce, 53, was one of the main candidates for the post when it was last available following the departure of Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2006.

However, the FA chose Steve McClaren, who was an integral part of the set-up under Eriksson in his role as assistant manager.

Allardyce said: "I am contracted to Newcastle United and from my point of view, that contract needs to be honoured.

"I am not in a position like I was at my old club where the chairman openly extended the invitation for me to go for the position. I am not in that position now."

Asked if he was ruling himself out, he replied: "Yes."

At the time of McClaren's appointment Allardyce was manager at Bolton and his then chairman Phil Gartside, a board member of the FA, encouraged him to apply for the job.

Now at Newcastle, his current employers have a less comfortable relationship with the English football's governing body, and the two parties have had disagreements over compensation claims for injuries to Michael Owen sustained on international duty.
