Premier League - Kinnear given extra month

Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has revealed that he will be in charge until at least the end of December.

Kinnear has been on a rolling, month-to-month contract since taking charge following Kevin Keegan's walk-out at the beginning of September.

The Irishman has impressed in that time and, after earning a good draw against Premier League leaders Chelsea, he is set to stay for a minimum of an extra month.

"The deal was to be in charge until the club was sold and nothing has changed since then to be honest," said Kinnear.

"But I have been informed that I am here for another month and that will bring us up to the transfer window.

"So if I can twist [owner Mike Ashley's] arm and get a few quid out of him, I can buy a couple of players."

Kinnear was a surprise appointment at St James' Park but top managers are reluctant to look at the post until the unpopular Ashley sells the club.

With the current economic climate putting off prospective buyers, a deal does not look close although an American consortium is in prime position for a bid according to Kinnear.

"The club has not got a buyer yet but people are talking to them. So far, nobody has come up with the cash," Kinnear added.

"Mike said they were Americans but the offer they made was well below his estimation of what the club was worth."

  1. COME ON JOE! Lets all of us TOON fans get behind him perhaps this was what the club needed ...not a big name but an honest hard working bloke (like the fans?) instead of prima donnas

  2. Joe deserved another chance to shine in the premier league, like everybody else.He wants it bad enough and believe it let him do it , forget about others as the others might not have the will and believe then it will be another season of chaos. Think about the difficulty of getting everybody to work as a unit, from manager , players ,staffs and owner. More to players and manager. So let JK have a shot.

  3. I am not surprised Joe Kinnear has lifted Newcastle off the bottom of the Premier.
He was a great player as well as a brilliant coach - remember the 'Crazy Gang' Wimbledon would never have had the success they did if Joe hadn't come along. I think that when Newcastle finally find a buyer the owners will probably ask Joe to stick around - Who knows, maybe Keegan scored an own goal by walking out on the club (again).
