Gabriele Tarquini secured the 2009 WTCC drivers' title with a fifth-place finish in a shortened second race at Macao.
Augusto Farfus was awarded the victory as the action was stopped after just eight laps following a massive crash involving Felix Porteiro, Franz Engstler and Andre Couto. Ironically, Porteiro won the independents' race despite going out since the final results were based on the previous lap.
SEAT driver Tarquini had gone in to the final race of the season with a six-point advantage over team-mate and title rival Yvan Muller.
But Muller's third place finish was not enough to overhaul the Italian as BMW duo Farfus and Jorg Muller took the first two positions in the race.
Despite their 1-2, BMW were denied the manufacturers' title as SEAT drivers Jordi Gene and Tiago Monteiro finished strongly to secure the championship for the Spanish marque.
Tom Coronel won the independent drivers' title.
Porteiro and Engstler were hospitalised after the crash; the former was given the all clear while the latter was diagnosed with a fractured collarbone.
