World Cup - Evra: Henry deserves statue

Eurosport - Sun, 22 Nov 12:01:00 2009

Underfire France striker Thierry Henry has received support from his international team-mate Patrice Evra who believes that instead of criticising their captain the French should "make him a statue".

FOOTBALL Thierry Henry statue - 0

Henry's double handball against the Republic of Ireland sparked accusations of cheating and prompted widespread criticism of the Barcelona striker.

So blatant was his handling of the ball to set up William Gallas's decisive goal in the World Cup play-off in Paris that even the French public and former international colleagues, including Emmanuel Petit and Bixente Lizarazu, turned on him.

But Manchester United left-back Evra, who also featured in the controversial match, has leapt to the defence of the former Arsenal hero, saying he should be lauded instead of pilloried for his contribution over the two-legged tie.

"We should make him a statue," Evra said in L'Equipe.

"That the world's press destroys Henry is no concern. But that we, in France, put ourselves there, this is not possible. It needs to stop.

"If Titi (Henry) had gone to the referee to have him cancel the goal and we had lost, the same people would be talking about his ego.

"Frankly, if he had done that, I would have said to him, 'Titi, you betrayed us'. The handball was an instinctive gesture. Which sportsman can look coldly at himself and pretend he wouldn't have done that? Who would have gone to see the referee to say that to him? Those people are hypocrites. We go to South Africa, that is it."

He added: "In football, there are injustices all the time. Titi does not deserve this. Leave him in peace. Who made the error? The referee."

Despite loud calls from the Football Association of Ireland, Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen and several French politicians for the game to be replayed, FIFA have already ruled out that possibility.

The French Football Federation have also rejected Irish pleas for a rematch, although Henry issued a statement saying a replay would be "the fairest solution".

Evra, however, does not agree and the defender would only be willing to replay the game in virtual format.

He said: "When I think that certain politicians want the game replayed, they do not know even if the ball is round or oval and they will be the first ones to go and drink champagne in South Africa (at the World Cup).

"For me, I'll replay the game whenever you want: on the PlayStation."

  1. MU should look into offloading Evera - he is a very good player without doubt but MU has so far avoided cheating like plague. Evera's statement is a blemish to the record. Get the hell out of MU Evera. Cheating can never be condoned.

  2. I agree the match can't be replayed, but Henry should be banned from the World Cup. As it stands cheats win, but I don't mean the whole France team, they didn't make him use his hand.

  3. FIFA wants france in the WC at all cost because IT IS an african team, maybe the best african team in the tournament , I say it as a compliment to the players ( even though handy/ henry is the shame there) most of the players are good talents AFRICAN/FRENCH , AFRICAN/CARRIBEAN and ARAB/AFRICAN/FRENCH ,,the sad story is that in france most minority are treated miserably as 3rd class citizens , relegated in crappy almost landfill towns and put down with the worst cliche' stereotypes , it's only those who can help france win in sports that are respected , and france really needs help in football , if there was an all white/french blood team , it would probably be as good as albania I guess , Ribery being the best in there , and most of their historic white players were of italian descent (Platini,Cantona ,Ginola , Candela , Squillaci and more....) I bring up the ethnic discourse in here because the french don't admit/appreciate their multiethnic pride but keep talking about one country ,france without glorifying their foreign assimilated ethnic talents ,,,,,the french must say WE ARE PROUD OF OUR AFRICAN/FRENCH TEAM and nothing else ,,this is the only way they should talk about their team , and I'm sure everybody agrees on this forum .... and they would be liked more for saying that.........Right ??
the great african ancestry talent must be appreciated and aknowledged in any team....

  5. The game cannot be replayed. I am not in support of anyone here but im glad france qualified. All i want to say is that, this is part of the game. There are worse cases than this. If the match is replayed, then the 1986 world cup match between argentina and england should be played again(maradona's hand of god).

  6. i have a feeling that actual footballers (not eurosport couch coaches) are not as outraged as people on this forum. players understand that match deciding mistakes are made day in and day out- does this mean we shouldn't complain? NO, but we should direct it to the refs who make the decisions, football associations and FIFA itself for rules that do not allow recourse for wrong decisions taken by refs. what i do not understand is the anger directed at TH- ok, lets say the ref had judged his handball, given a goal kick and the match ended 0-1 to ireland. would he (Titi) be still called a cheat and given such grief???? I DON'T think so!!!!! but why not? he would still have handled the ball!!!!! somebody has mentioned the Georgia-Ireland match and how a different outcome there (had the Ireland foul been judged as such)could have meant Ireland might not have even gone through to the playoffs... thats how it works in football- today a wrong decision favours you, tomorrow it favours your opponent- learn to live with it!

  7. There is cheating in every sport. It is a big thing because it's a British team. If Ireland wher goood for the world cup why did they not qualify like England who qualified with two game in hand other than waing for a win in the last match. They should forget about this world cup and start the build up for the next one after 2010. Wake up you Ireland boys. Whenever you play a game you what to win, if it means fooll, dive to win a penality, handball is not the first one if it's kind. Ireland if there were a better team why they did not score more goes. They score by chance and failed to defend it. The referee is only human like anyboby else. Work a bit harder boys to qualify in the next world cup. Forget about 2010.

  8. This is GREAT NEWS ! Whenever the french team is unloved by its public and critisized by the journalists we just get better and better........
Keep going like that and we stand a chance in this next world cup. This is BRILLIANT !
1998 - players and manager were critisized so much and we won it.
2006 - team was branded "old" and we almost won it.
Keep going like that guys.......i like it !

  10. If a replay was in fact to happen, then FIFA would have to employ it retrospectively,ie,Maradonnas "hand of god" goal against engerlund, engerlund winning in `66,the list goes on & on.The FAI need to stop crying.Maybe Henry should be made a freeman of Dublin.................................Discuss......... ...............................

  12. here in new york we saw the french are all cheaters , disgusting , it's in their blood ,always playing dirty tricks since their history , the french league is full of match fixing ,referee tricks , doping , penalty diving and more........ SHAME ON FRANCE ! the worst example of country dishonesty in the world , and FIFA is ALWAYS trying everything to help them , don't forget the FAKE PENALTY they gave them at the world cup final in berlin
WHAT A DIVE FROM MALOUDA ! and the long hesitation before ejecting zidane , the referee didn't want to red card him , and how swiftly he invalidated (justly) Toni's goal for De Rossi offside , NOTE that squillaci offside wasn't called before Henry double handled the ball , it's all planned according to Platini scheme , CREEPY ! ...... THE IRISH KNOW THE FAIR PLAY FROM PLAYING ITALY AND THE CHEATING FROM FRANCE ..

  19. Every professional footballer in every match in every country cheats if he thinks he can get away with it.

Tackles that a toddler could step through will bring them down, especially near or in the box. When caught by an opponent they roll around like their leg's been ripped off, then they jump up and play on like nothing happened. They pull shirts, shorts or anything they can get hold of. Somebody moves towards them with an elbow up and they hit the floor like they've been smacked in the face with a shovel. There are trainers who specialise in coaching on how to make a dive convincing. When they are caught cheating and carded they protest loudly that it was all somebody elses fault.

Every player will do anything he can to win, because winning means money and every professional player plays for money, not country or team. Yet people are surprised when a player gets caught doing what they are paid to do. This is how the game is played. Get used to it, people.

  20. why is it even footballs believe its instinct to put there hand on the ball twice they are not goal keepers plain and simple there job isnt to use there hands so his instinct is to get his hand out the way well i play in defence and from now on when there is a freekick against my team and im in the wall if the ball is lobed over my head im going to use my hand and say it was instinctive and tell the ref he cant give me a red or give them a freekick as henry did it and they are perfesional what makes me sick is im a man utd fan and have to support evra when playin for man utd but even ill be booing him and he best watch out for John Oshea cause he might be a team mate at club but for country he was against him in that match and wont like the comments made
