Cardiff booked their place in the semi-finals of the FAW Premier Cup with a 1-0 victory over Welsh Premier League outfit Welshpool at Maesydre.Jon Brown's late free-kick proved the difference between the sides to earn the Bluebirds a tie against Newport County for a place in the final.
Darren Purse, Aaron Ramsey and Kevin Cooper were included in City's starting XI, but it was the Lillywhites who had the ball in the net first courtesy of Calvin Davies, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
The home side soon had the ball in the back of the net again but the referee's assistant again raised his flag for offside.
Brown came close with a curling effort early in the second half and Terrell Webbe was inches away from putting the Bluebirds ahead with 75 minutes gone when his shot flashed wide of the post.
Cardiff finally broke the deadlock in the 85th minute when Brown curled a set-piece into the bottom-left corner after Cooper had been fouled on the edge of the area.
