Lawwell: Fans have part to play

Wed 23 Jan, 07:45 PM

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell insists the club's supporters have a part to play in the club's quest for trophies this season.Lawwell has reminded supporters the club risk being punished in the case of a breach of the recently introduced rules governing unacceptable conduct.

And with the threat of points deductions included in the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football Association rules governing crowd behaviour, Lawwell is eager to see Celtic fans behave impeccably in 2008.

Any incidents of sectarianism involving Celtic fans at games could see the club severely punished, however the Hoops have taken measures to contain the problem and have hailed the response from supporters.

Lawwell said: "We once again call on our fans to show the great support which characterises them and to continue to observe the rules which have been introduced by the footballing authorities.

"Great strides have been made in this area and we are very pleased with the response which we have received from fans. However, it is important that together we continue to be mindful of our responsibilities.

"Fundamentally, as a family club, open to everyone, Celtic fully supports these new guidelines.

"Celtic will not tolerate any form of unacceptable conduct by supporters and will take the appropriate action whenever anyone attempts to bring the club's name into disrepute.

"In addition, severe penalties have been put in place by the footballing authorities which could affect individuals and indeed the club itself.

"All supporters should be fully aware of the potential impact on the club of any form of negative or unacceptable conduct."
