Quinn relieved McGhee is staying

Wed 23 Jan, 05:32 PM

Motherwell captain Paul Quinn is glad managerial stability at both Old Firm clubs rules out boss Mark McGhee moving away from Fir Park.Minutes before the Steelmen's Scottish Cup fourth-round replay win over Hearts at Fir Park on Tuesday, McGhee learned he had lost out to George Burley for the Scotland manager's position.

The 22-year-old believes Celtic and Rangers fans, who are enjoying an engrossing battle between their clubs for the SPL title this season, would love the former Wolves and Leicester boss to be in charge at their club.

He said: "It's definitely a boost that the boss is staying. It's also a boost that the two Old Firm bosses are top drawer.

"If any of them had to go then we would be worried.

"Ask any Old Firm supporter and they would like Mark McGhee in the hot seat.

"But luckily Walter Smith and Gordon Strachan have been there and done it and we are just glad those positions are filled.

"As far as we are concerned Mark McGhee is our manager. I don't know if he would have wanted to take care of Scotland on and off because he gets right into training, he's there every day wanting to be involved.

"That was what I was counting on."

Motherwell's first game at Fir Park since the tragic death of Phil O'Donnell at the end of December was a contributory factor in the game being delayed for 10 minutes to allow the crowd in.

And Quinn is hoping a long Scottish Cup run would be another fitting tribute to the former Motherwell skipper.

Motherwell face Dundee in the fifth round on Saturday week and Quinn is hoping the Irn-Bru First Division side are just another obstacle to be overcome on the way to the Hampden final in May.

He said: "You go into tournaments so you can get to Hampden for the final.

"We hope to be in the next round after the Dundee game and that will be just as hard, if not harder, than Hearts.

"It would mean a lot more this season if we went on a good run.

"I don't think the supporters would ever forget the effort we have been putting in because of recent incidents.

"I was looking at a picture of Phil on the way in and I'm sure he will be chuffed for us."

Hearts can consider themselves unfortunate to be out of the competition after a spirited second-half performance but stand-in boss Stevie Frail finds his future in the balance.

Teenage midfielder Eggert Jonsson, who conceded the penalty when he blocked Ross McCormack's cross with his arm, accepts the Jambos next two fixtures - an SPL match against Aberdeen at Pittodrie and against Rangers in the semi-final of the CIS Insurance Cup at Hampden - are crucial to Hearts season.

He said: "I don't think the performances have been that bad but the results have not been good.

"We have been trying to build momentum in recent weeks but we need to be in the top six.

"We need to try and get up there. And obviously the game against Rangers next Wednesday is massive. It's our only chance to get something from the season."
