Roma survive Mexes dismissal

Wed 23 Jan, 09:30 PM

Roma earned a 1-1 draw at Sampdoria in the first leg of their Coppa Italia quarter-final tie despite playing for over 70 minutes with 10 men.The Giallorossi, who currently occupy second place in Serie A, had French defender Philippe Mexes dismissed in the 18th minute after he collected two yellow cards.

Samp finally made their numerical advantage count just after the hour mark when Reto Ziegler put them in front.

But Mirko Vucinic levelled matters seven minutes later to give Luciano Spalletti's men the edge ahead of the return game at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma had to play without the support of their fans in Genoa after Italy's anti-hooliganism body banned supporters from the capital from attending after violence flared at their weekend victory over Catania.

Catania lost again after going down 3-2 at Udinese in the first leg of their last eight encounter, Felipe grabbing the winner with 14 minutes remaining.

Damiano Ferronetti put the hosts ahead but efforts from Mariano Izco and Jorge Martinez turned the tie around.

The Sicilians could not hold on, though, with a Simone Pepe penalty bringing Udinese level before Felipe struck.
