Senegal's achievement in reaching the 2002 World Cup quarter-finals raised their profile among Africa's elite teams but the closest they have come to a Nations Cup title was the 2002 final which they lost to Cameroon on penalties.
Just under six years later, Senegal's golden generation is thinning out, although it is being replaced by an equally talented new crop including free scoring Olympique Marseille striker Mamadou Niang and Fulham's Diomansy Kamara.
The pair are expected to form an attacking trio with El Hadji Diouf, one of the veterans of the 2002 team.
Tunisia are also in transition but with several key players from their Nations Cup triumph in 2002 still in their squad.
Brazil-born Francileudo dos Santos, who has seen little club action with Toulouse in France this season, is still expected to lead their attack, alongside new finds Yassine Chikhaoui and 20-year-old sensation Amine Chermiti.
Completing the tournament's first round of matches, Angola face 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa in the second Group D game.
Angola will have captain Figueiredo back from injury for the second game of the day but are unsure about the availability of key midfielder Andre for the clash with South Africa.
Bafana Bafana, whose coach Carlos Alberto Parreira returns to the Nations Cup after a 40-year absence, are without goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez, who has a fractured finger.
But captain Aaron Mokoena, in a new role in midfield, is expected to start despite being carried off on a stretcher last week during the team's final warm-up against Botswana.
South Africa have left several regulars, including Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy, at home, opting instead to take a youthful team to the tournament.
