Chesterfield's proposed new stadium appears a step closer as developers Wilson Bowden intend to submit a planning application for the project.

The Spireites revealed their plans to leave Saltergate - the club's home for the entirety of its 141-year history - and relocate to a purpose-build 10,000 all-seater arena on the site of the old Dema Glass factory in March.

The project has been subject to numerous delays but Wilson Bowden, who acquired the 22 acre site in 2005, has since completed a major demolition and de-contamination programme in preparation for development.

Chesterfield chairman Barrie Hubbard said: "It is exciting news for both the football club and the town that after so many previous setbacks we now have the opportunity to fulfil our long-standing aspirations to provide a new sporting stadium for North Derbyshire."

Planning proposals for the development, which was initially set to be completed in time for Chesterfield to begin the 2008-09 season in the new stadium, are set to be submitted during February.
