French full-back Willy Sagnol has retired from professional football.

FOOTBALL 2008 Sagnol - 0

France international Sagnol, 31, was widely expected to quit playing after failing to recover from a series of injuries.

"No matter what we did he still had too much pain in his Achilles' tendon while training," , Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the Sueddeutsch Zeitung.

Sagnol has been at Bayern since 2000, after spells with Saint Etienne and Monaco, but has barely played during the last 18 months and decided to call it a day.

Bayern Munich team manager Uli Hoeness pointed to a potential role at the Monagesque club.

"I assume that he will take on a job in management at a French club", Hoeness said.

"From rumours I have heard, he could become the sporting director at Monaco."
