Kaiserslautern striker Dorge Kouemaha has been in contact with Sebastian Proedl to apologise for inflicting severe facial injuries on the Werder Bremen defender.
Cameroon forward Kouemaha attempted an overhead kick 24 minutes into Saturday's 0-0 draw at the Fritz-Walter Stadion as the Bundesliga resumed following the winter break. However, he only succeeded in hitting Austrian defender Proedl full in the face.
Proedl had to be stretchered off the field, and it was later confirmed that he sustained a broken nose and jawbone as well as a concussion.
Kouemaha told television station Sudwest-Fernsehen: "I tried to talk to him on the phone but I could not, so I then sent him a text message. I wrote that I'm sorry and wished him a speedy recovery.
"He appreciated the gesture and he said that it could have happened the other way around."
Proedl was kept overnight at the Kaiserslautern-West Pfalz clinic before being released on Sunday. He is expected to be out of action for two months.
Bremen are currently in fifth place in the Bundesliga pushing for a European place, while Kaiserslautern are in the bottom three.
