Premier League - Arteta ruled out until next season

Eurosport - Mon, 23 Feb 14:29:00 2009

Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta has been ruled out for the rest of the season after scans confirmed a ruptured cruciate knee ligament.

The Spaniard was carried off on a stretcher after landing awkwardly in the third minute of Sunday's 0-0 Premier League draw at Newcastle.

Arteta was immediately driven back to Merseyside, and scans on Sunday night showed a serious injury to his right knee that will keep him out at least until the end of the season in May.

The 26-year-old is a talismanic figure for Everton, and has contributed six Premier League goals and seven assists this season, helping the Toffees to sixth in the table.

Manager David Moyes said: "Injuries are part of football but what we'll miss is that we don't have the squad or numbers to do it.

"You've got to have the numbers, and that's where our problem comes."

Moyes has already lost Yakubu Ayegbeni for the season with a ruptured Achilles, while fellow striker James Vaughan is not expected back until the middle of next month because of a knee injury.

Midfielders Leon Osman (stomach strain) and Steven Pienaar (hamstring) missed the Newcastle game.

"We have had players out of position before but not this much out of position," Moyes added "We are close to breaking point."

Everton also saw striker Victor Anichebe hobble off after a horrific two-footed challenge from Kevin Nolan that saw the Newcastle midfielder sent off, although the 20-year-old has only suffered bruising.

Anichebe said: "I've never felt as much pain in my life. I thought I'd broken my leg.

"I couldn't even look down, to be fair. It was a terrible tackle but I don't think he really meant it, he came and said sorry. But what can you do?

"I felt so much pain. Now it's not too bad. It's not as bad as I first thought anyway, but I'm feeling a bit of pain in my knee and the back of my calf and down my shin so we'll see how it is."

  3. Horrible. I got this injury before and it is depressing and painful to heal. He'll be back next year, better and stronger. I think Everton is the surprise of this season. They play good and are not scared. And I am no Everton supporter.

  5. Nolan is a disgrace, I read today that he has the most sending offs in the history of the premiership , and has been booked 10 times this season already. A 3 game ban is not enough for this kind of two footed assault called `a tackle`. He could have easily ended the career of Victor Anichebe and his apology does not change this fact. So easy to say sorry, not so easy to become a decent pro and cut this type of 2 footed lunge out of his game. Hope that Anichebe recovers and continues to prosper.

  6. I'm completely stunned by the Arteta news but we're no longer a one man team, we still have a midfield of Cahill, Fellaini, Osman, Pienaar and Neville a terrific 5 man midfield couple that with the capabilities of Rodwell and Gosling plus the potential greatness of AVD (i won't mention Castillo lol). Its not all doom and gloom lets push on for top 5 and next season with all players fit and signing Jo i don't think we'll need to sign many more to be a proper force, next years team Howard, Hibbert, Jagielka, Lescott, Baines, Neville, Arteta, Pienaar, Fellaini, Osman and Yakubu . On the bench will be Jo, Gosling, Rodwell, Yobo and Vaughan , i don't think any team will fancy that challenge. COYB!!

  7. Macca_tatts I totally agree. Nolan must think a two footed stamp will get him that "dream" move to his boyhood team. Let's face it he only did a Gerrard but the ref gave the decision he didn't wait for a panel to decide it was assault. For that is what it was.

  9. Nolan's tackle was a disgrace, the apology is about as genuine as Liverpool's title challenge. Watch what he was like before and after the red card. Pleading innocence and making out it was Anichebe who was faking it.
Loss of Arteta a massive blow but if the team galvanise and go into dog's of war mode they'll still be challenging for a European place and the FA cup. It was the dog's of war that won it in 95 so why not this year.

  10. its getting alarming at the kind of tackles one sees of late in the EPL.i dont think the primary aim of any player is to end the career of his fellow player, but i am beginning to feel so.Players like marco van Bastern and oleguner soljeir just to mention a few could have had wonderful footballing years if not for injuries inflicted conciously sometimes by fellow players.the governing authorities need to come down @#$% such culprits and punishment ranging from outter most ban or ban footballers until the players they injured returns.sometimes u can see the intent behind some tackles when watching from afar and wonder if those player is in the right sport or career.its a shame for people to conceive evil intensions about their fellow 'human' players and execute such intensions on the field of play.this is not to say there are not genuine mistakes in terms of tackling but sometimes one can easily tell the motive behind such tackles.its a shame Nolan, wish i could tell u more

  12. Saying sorry makes it OK then Nolan!!!! I think not. Nolan should be ashamed of himself. That tackle deserves a lengthy ban and a massive loss of wages. Anichebe is very lucky and there is no place in football for tackles like that whether Nolan meant it or not. Arteta is one of the best playmakers in the EPL. His creativity and goals will be badly missed and could cost Everton a place in Europe.

  14. Mikel will be missed, but as we are not a one man team the rest will stand and be counted, nolan should have a long ban to give other players from other teams a chance of not being crippled, nolan...your a useless talantless hack

  15. hey @21 its because Arteta is a near world class player and if everton didnt want somebody getting injured it would defo be him. Anichebe is good but a long way off of Artetas quality. bad news for the toffees he has always been instrumental for you, especially when your doing so well this is a major blow. Nolans tackle was disgraceful and to try and look innocent afterwards is awful, he should hand his head in shame

  16. this was such a sick challenge that i was angered watching it. especially his @#$% reaction. but then we've seen career ending challenges from bone-head nolan before. what a scum bag for doing it - total and utter scum bag. i don't give a monkeys if he was waiting in the tunnel to apologise, would have been too late had he destroyed the lads leg which he was lucky not too. i genuinely hope that something occurs to him very soon to stop him playing football again - preferably a horrendous leg injury. sick.

I've come to realise that 98% of English press re Man UTD fans... if not the likes of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Gareth Barry, Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill etc should ve gotten better publicity then the likes of some Man utd over rated players.
