Premier League - Gomes: I'm still Spurs number one

Heurelho Gomes insists he is Tottenham's number one goalkeeper despite the arrival of Carlo Cudicini at White Hart Lane in January's transfer window.

The Brazilian shot-stopper was signed from PSV Eindhoven last summer by ex-manager Juande Ramos to replace Paul Robinson, however, he has lost his place in the side to Cudicini who was signed from Chelsea last month.

Gomes has warned that he expects to remain manager Harry Redknapp's first-choice keeper and will be unhappy if Cudicini continues to play.

"It was disappointing to be left out of the Arsenal match earlier this month because I had told Harry I was ready to come back into the team," he said.

"I feel the club supports me and the chairman has told me I am his number one.

"I don't feel threatened by Carlo because it is important for a club like Tottenham, with aspirations to challenge for honours, to have quality replacements for every position.

"I have at least three years left in my contract and intend to see them through. You are not going to see me happy on the bench, that's for sure.

"The absence of a keeper to stand in when I had a hip injury was one of our biggest problems this season.

"Having said that, I was signed to be the club's number one keeper and expect things to remain this way."

Redknapp has assured Gomes he will play in Sunday's Carling Cup final, for which Cudicni is cup-tied, despite a poor performance in last Thursday's UEFA Cup defeat away to Shakhtar Donetsk.

"I do get nervy when teams get free-kicks. You start to think, 'Can we deal with it?'" said Redknapp.

"Gomes has done great, though, he's been terrific. He'll play at Wembley."

  13. He may have been signed as the first team keeper, but­ he is @#$%, at least his form in England has been. You­ can't expect to keep your first team place if your­ not playing well, have to earn your place not just­ think your automatic. He'll be gone by the end of­ next season.

  14. Cudicini is a far better keeper than Gomes and most­ importantly has a very vast amount of experience in the­ league & certainly is vital for their survival this­ season
