Premier League - Smith 'rejects Wolves offer'

Thu, 23 Feb 12:07:00 2012

Former Rangers manager Walter Smith has turned down the chance to take charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers as Mick McCarthy's successor, according to reports.

Smith is understood to have held talks with Wolves owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey about taking the post until the end of the season, having initially said no to the job on a long-term basis.

However the 63-year-old, who has been out of football since ending his second spell in charge of Rangers at the end of last season, has turned down the offer because of the time frame of the job in hand is too short.

Wolves are currently in the relegation zone on goal difference, and have 13 games to ensure top-flight survival for a third successive season.

Several other managers have also been in the frame to take the Molineux hot seat following McCarthy's dismissal last week.

Former Charlton Athletic and West Ham United manager Alan Curbishley was approached, as was Brighton and Hove Albion boss Gus Poyet, but both turned down the club's advances.

Reading manager Brian McDermott was also a target, but he signed a new three-year contract with the Royals on Wednesday.

With Smith turning down a short-term role, former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce may be seen as the new favourite.

Bruce was maintaining late on Wednesday evening that he had not spoken to either Wolves owner Steve Morgan or chief executive Jez Moxey since his initial interview on Friday.

But it is believed that the former Sunderland, Birmingham and Wigan boss is still under consideration from the Wolves hierarchy.

Bruce, who has relocated back to the Midlands, remains keen on the role even though he has been exasperated at the lack of contact during the past five days. He has also received a negative reaction from some sections of Wolves fans over his possible appointment.
