Six Nations - Scotland name Hogg for France clash

Wed, 22 Feb 12:40:00 2012

Teenage full-back Stuart Hogg will make his first start for Scotland in Sunday's Six Nations championship match against France at Murrayfield in one of four changes to the team.

RUGBY Stuart Hogg, Scotland - 0

Hogg, 19, will be joined by his Warriors' team mates Graeme Morrison at centre and flanker John Barclay. Mike Blair has been preferred to his British Lions team mate Chris Cusiter at scrumhalf.

There are two positional changes with Rory Lamont moving to the right wing and his elder brother Sean to outside centre.

"It's a dream come true to play international rugby," Hogg said in a media release from Scotland Rugby on Wednesday.

"When I was a kid we'd play full contact rugby in the street in the Weensland area of Hawick. I'd be about five and there would be kids there up to about 12 or 13 years-old and you'd always think about what it would be like to play for Scotland.

"Now I've got the opportunity to win for Scotland at Murrayfield - brilliant."

Scotland have lost both their opening two games in the tournament while France defeated Italy in their opening fixture. The World Cup finalists' second-round match against Ireland on Feb. 11 was postponed until March 4 because of a frozen pitch at the Stade de France.

Scotland: 15-Stuart Hogg, 14-Rory Lamont, 13-Sean Lamont, 12-Graeme Morrison, 11-Lee Jones, 10-Greig Laidlaw, 9-Mike Blair, 8-David Denton, 7-Ross Rennie, 6-John Barclay, 5-Jim Hamilton, 4-Richie Gray, 3-Geoff Cross, 2-Ross Ford (captain), 1-Allan Jacobsen.

Replacements: 16-Scott Lawson, 17-Ed Kalman, 18-Alastair Kellock, 19-Richie Vernon, 20-Chris Cusiter, 21-Duncan Weir, 22-Nick De Luca.

  1. doncamillopetitcuredecampagne I can't really argue with your assessment.

Very well said, and good to see a pleasant post expresssing a balanced and considered opinion, especially with all the nonsense which is becoming prevalent on these boards

I can't wish you guys luck, for obvious reasons, but always a pleasure to have you in Edinburgh with us.

  2. I wont see how the Scots could beat France on Sunday, because they are playing a 5 years old rugby, i wish to see a nice and fair play! Courage mes amis!

  3. bob b, I think (and hope) we will win against Scotland. That's what logic would dictate anyway. But at the same time I'm not overconfident about it...
Your team is playing good rugby and has been for a few years now. The only thing that kills you is the lack of speed in your backlines. I remember a few years ago, for the first match of the Lievremont era, we won in Murrayfield. That day you broke our defensive line 3 or 4 times, with clean breaks and lovely moves, but noone could finish these moves and turn them into tries. That was your downfall that day and has been for a while on my opinion... All it would take would be a it more belief, a bit more support and pace at the back.
I thought Scotland played very well in the world cup and were extremely unlucky to go out at the group stage...

As I said before, we should win in Murrayfield, but it definitely won't be a walk in the park and Scotland are more than capable of upseting the odds, especially if they take the score early ! We'll have to be 100% focused on our game, otherwise we're in for a bad surprise...

Anyway I'm just hoping for a good match and a french victory of course ;-) ! Allez les Bleus !

  6. Kicking the ball back to the French is the only way they'l get into the French half i'm afraid John. Scotland will try to depress the French with their Boring slumps up the middle but whilst it killed the games against England and Wales it probably wont stop the French running game. I dont expect a any game that involves Scotland to be a classic and not expecting much from this either, a slow soggy murrayfield may prevent total humilliation but France will still win by 20.

  7. All I want is a decent game with as few mistakes as possible, even I am getting fed up watching Scotland losing games they should have won. and for gods sake dont start kicking every ball back to the French, they love that .

  8. As a Scot, I'm very worried about this game.

I was worried about the Welsh game too, but despite a couple of serious mistakes, it wasn't too bad a performance.

The team we've put out is capable of beating France, but there's been so many games we've lost recently which we should have won.

I think if we can take the game to France for the first 20 minutes or so then we've got a chance of an upset.
If we let the French settle then I fear they'll rip us apart.

I'd love to see us win it, but I just don't think we're there yet.

  16. Terry the Turd haven't you worked it out yet, all the so called English turds are doing is responding to their leader, if you shut up and stopped insulting people when all they want to do is discuss rugby what do you expect, but no, all they see is your name after you leave another childish comment about them and their rugby team. So Terry stop insulting others, man-up and if you did not act like a cu'nt in the first place then people wont respond to you the same way will they?
