Irvine cautious despite fine run

Sun 23 Mar, 11:45 AM

Preston manager Alan Irvine refused to accept his side may have done enough to ensure Championship survival despite the 2-1 win over Burnley.Having taken 13 points from the last 15 available, the Deepdale boss could not hide his delight at another valuable win.

But he stressed: "I don't believe 50 points will be enough. You have to look how tight it is from the bottom up.

"If 50 points proves to be enough somebody will have hit a really bad run of form.

"The target before was 54 and it's still the target for now. If we get that in the next two games we can have a new target!

"I am keen for us to keep the momentum going. We have done well since the turn of the year and have gathered a bit of momentum in March."

Tamas Priskin, on loan from Watford, grabbed his first goal for Preston with a brilliant strike after four minutes, from Simon Whaley's cross.

And Priskin could easily have claimed a hat-trick before the interval.

Burnley also spurned a couple of good chances before James O'Connor drove the ball home from 18 yards and, although goalkeeper Andy Lonergan managed to get a hand to it, it took a deflection on the way in.

It was all over when Chris Brown pounced before the hour with a drilled shot after good work from Paul McKenna.

To cap a bad afternoon for Burnley, Clarke Carlisle was sent off for a foul on Sean St Ledger.

Irvine said: "We started the game very well and could probably have been out of sight. We scored one very good goal and missed two good chances, or three if you count the rebound.

"You know you can't afford to keep doing that and a team like Burnley are capable of hurting you. They have a lot of creative players.

"It was easier for me to watch the second half."

Burnley manager Owen Coyle admitted he was disappointed to leave with nothing.

"We are certainly making a habit of gifting goals," he said.

"Preston's second goal was a really soft one. We had probably three or four opportunities to deal with the ball but we have not done so and then paid a heavy price.

"I felt we probably merited an equaliser on the 90 minutes - or 93 minutes.

"We started really well and probably could have been in front but ended up a goal behind. It was a terrific finish.

"I thought some of our football in the first half was fantastic."

Coyle said his team had shot themselves in the foot and could not get away from the fact that they have been conceding some soft goals.

"We have tried to paper over the cracks and to some extent have done that. We know what is needed.

"Come the summer we will do that. We will take the club on to the level that we are looking for.

"There are six games to go and we would have to probably win a minimum of five and probably all six to figure in the play-offs.

"The players have shown that when they are really tuned and not gifting soft goals that they can do that. You have to bounce back very quickly and I hope the game next week will give us the opportunity to do that."
