Mountaineers Delight

Sun 23 Mar, 08:09 AM

West Virginia made sure that the upsets at the NCAA Tournament kept on coming when they dumped second-seeded Duke 73-67 in the second round of March Madness.

Joe Alexander had a monster day for WVU, scoring 22 points and grabbing eleven rebounds as the Mountaineers overcame an eight point deficit to put them into the 'Sweet 16' of America's biggest basketball tournament.

It was a mixed bag for the other big names.

While top-seeded UCLA had to come back from 10 points down to beat plucky Texas A&M 53-49, there were no problems for Kansas, who crushed UNLV 75-56.

Third-seeded Stanford managed to avoid trouble by eventually putting away Marquette 82-81 in overtime, while Wisconsin - who were also seeded third - beat Kansas State 72-55. Xavier overcame Purdue 85-78.

Notre Dame had no answer to UCLA and Stanford Pac-10 rivals Washington State, who blew by them 61-41, while Michigan State made sure that they would be playing in the last 16 with a 65-54 win over Pittsburgh.
