Villa eye Sid as Barry replacement

Wed 23 Apr, 10:30 AM

Martin O'Neill fears Gareth Barry will quit Aston Villa this summer and has lined up Chelsea's Steve Sidwell as a replacement for his skipper.Barry still has two years to run on his current contract at Villa Park, but is attracting interest from Liverpool and Chelsea after another impressive season.

Rafael Benitez is rumoured to have already made an enquiry as to the midfielder's availability, with the prospect of launching a £14million raid this summer.

Villa are understandably keen to retain the England international's services, and will try and fend off the interest from elsewhere by offering their skipper a bumper £47,000 a week deal to remain in the Midlands.

However, that may not be enough to tempt Barry into committing his future to the club and O'Neill has revealed that the situation is starting to give him cause for concern.

"We will do our utmost to try and keep Gareth, whether we can I don't know," the Villa boss said in the Daily Mirror.

If Barry does decide to depart for pastures new over the close season O'Neill is believed to be keen on bringing in Sidwell as a replacement.

The former Reading midfielder has struggled to break into the first-team fold at Stamford Bridge this season and would welcome the opportunity to play regular football again.

It is thought that a bid of around £5million would be enough to persuade the Blues into a sale.
