Andy Murray set up a mouthwatering third round clash against Novak Djokovic with a 6-4 6-1 win over Italian Filippo Volandri at the Monte Carlo Masters.
The British player - seeded number 14 at the tournament - has never beaten the Serb in competitive play but he heads into the match in as strong a position as ever to break that duck following another convincing performance on the clay.
Murray kicked off the tournament with a solid 7-6 6-4 win over Feliciano Lopez on Monday and he was able to build on that win against Volandri a day later.
Murray always looked in control of the match and even though he dropped a service game immediately after having himself broken to go 4-2 up in the first set, his impressive coverage of the court and shot making proved too much for Volandri.
Another break in the tenth game of the day handed Murray the first set 6-4 and the Scot refused to allow his opponent near him again for the remainder of the match.
Volandri managed just one further game as unforced errors crept into his game, leaving Murray to coast through the second set and set a reunion with number three seed Djokovic.
"It was very very tight, much tighter than the scoreline would suggest," said Murray.
"The key today was to be patient, with all these long rallies."
He added: "Novak is number one in the [ATP points] Race and he won the first Grand Slam of the year so it's going to be tough. He's been very good in his first match."
