Davies to miss Wales double-header

Fri 23 May, 04:45 PM

Fulham midfielder Simon Davies has been ruled out of Wales' two international friendlies next week because of an ankle injury. The 28 year-old has been the stand-in captain for the last four unbeaten matches in the long-term absence of Craig Bellamy.

But an ankle knock will rule him out of Wednesday's meeting with Iceland in Reykjavik and the following Sunday's game against Holland in Rotterdam.

Davies played a key part in Fulham's dramatic and successful battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League and was nursed through the final fixtures of the campaign as the injury worsened.

Now Fulham want the Haverfordwest-born player to rest during the summer.

Wales will also be without Hull pair Boaz Myhill and Sam Ricketts, plus Doncaster's Brian Stock for the Iceland match.

Hull want all their first-team squad - including Myhill and Ricketts - to take part in a open-top bus tour of the city on Monday, regardless of whether they are successful in their Championship play-off final against Bristol City on Saturday.

Stock will play for Doncaster against Leeds at Wembley on Sunday in the League One play-off and will be given time to recover before joining up with the squad, along with Myhill and Ricketts, for the match in Rotterdam.

Veteran midfielder Carl Robinson, who will be needed by Major League Soccer side Toronto early next week, also misses out on Iceland. Cardiff's Paul Parry has withdrawn for personal reasons.

Plymouth's Jermaine Easter has pulled out as he recovers from tendonitis, while midfielder David Vaughan is also absent for both games as he is involved in a promotion race with Spanish second division side Real Sociedad.

However, the 25 year-old has barely been involved in the first-team since former manager Chris Coleman departed mid-season and he is likely to return to British football in time for next season.

Wales boss John Toshack is expected to give several under-21s their first caps in Reykjavik, with Jack Collison, Joe Jacobson, Sam Vokes - who moved from Bournemouth to Wolves on a four-year deal today - and Ched Evans likely to start.

It seems unlikely Cardiff's highly-rated teenager Aaron Ramsey will be pushed into a starting role for either of the matches, Toshack being conscious the 17 year-old has had a tough season with the Bluebirds.

He came on as a late substitute in the FA Cup final and the latest transfer speculation is that he could soon be a Manchester United player but loaned back to the Ninian Park club for next term.

Ramsey could still find himself winning his first cap, but only as a substitute at some point on the trip.

Wales have been boosted by Bellamy's continued progress back from injury, the West Ham striker having not played since a brief substitute appearance at Wigan in February.

His last outing for Wales was the 2-1 win in San Marino last October.

Toshack will assess the 28-year-old in training ahead of the Iceland game to decide whether he can be risked in both internationals.

Considering the length of time he has been out battling groin and stomach problems which needed surgery, Toshack is unwilling to damage the player's long-term recovery and risk enraging West Ham.

Bellamy is likely to win his 50th cap in Rotterdam, with the prospect of Carl Fletcher or Chris Gunter captaining the side for the first time in Iceland.
