Villarreal have signed Brazil international defender Edmilson on a free transfer from Spanish Primera Liga rivals Barcelona.The 31-year-old, who has won 40 caps with Brazil, joins the side on a two-year deal following the expiration of his contract with the Catalan club.

Edmilson spent four years in Barcelona, following spells with Sao Paulo and Lyon.

He was also part of Brazil squad which won the World Cup in 2002.

A statement on Villarreal's website confirmed the deal and announced that Edmilson will be officially unveiled at a press conference on Monday afternoon at 12.30pm local time.
