Roma eye revenge in cup final

Fri 23 May, 08:15 PM

Coach Luciano Spalletti insists Roma are in the right frame of mind to take on Scudetto winners Internazionale in the Coppa Italia final. An epic title battle saw the Giallorossi suffer final day heartbreak as a draw at Catania coupled with Inter's victory at Parma meant they lost out on the title last Sunday.

Spalletti admits his team were disappointed, but vows they will go someway to avenging that loss by beating the newly-crowned league champions at the Stadio Olimpico.

"We're going into the Coppa Italia final after a week where there's been a bit of everything," the coach said.

"We were a bit upset at Catania because we knew how much effort we had put in throughout the season to keep the battle alive.

"But everything has been cleared after two days of bitterness. They have trained well and accepted the result.

"It should be acknowledged that Inter finished top, they were stronger. To be first is difficult in whatever sport.

"We will compliment them and we are at our best for this last battle.

"We came second but as runners-up, not losers. In one sense we didn't win anything but in another we have won a lot."

The clash is the fourth time on the trot that the pair have met in the Coppa Italia final with Inter currently winning the series 2-1.

However, Roma's triumph last year saw them beat the Italian champions 7-4 over two legs, thrashing the Nerazzurri 6-2 at the Stadio Olimpico.

The cup final has now been turned into a one-off match at the Olimpico and Roma will be hoping that home advantage will see them successfully defend their trophy and draw level with Juventus with a record nine cup successes.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini also has an impressive record in the competition, having won it six times as a player and four as a coach.

Mancini and his side will be feeling a sense of relief at clinching the Scudetto as they went into the final day of the season just one point ahead of the capital club, having held an 11-point advantage at one point in the campaign.

They will be looking to add the Coppa Italia to their trophy haul this season and complete the league and cup double for the second time in three seasons.

Whatever happens on the pitch, however, both teams are unanimous that they want the final to go smoothly off it.

The players have seemingly declared a truce in their war of words and Inter and Roma captains Javier Zanetti and Francesco Totti have pleaded for their supporters to do the same.

"Two great teams face each other at the Stadio Olimpico tomorrow evening," read a statement released by the pair.

"Two teams who have honoured the fans and the football championship thanks to their passion and effort, giving life to an emotional and hard-fought season, right until the last minute.

"Through the passion that all of us - fans and players - have shown during this exciting championship, we are sure that we will put on a great show tomorrow evening. An evening of joy and respect. A great evening of sport."

Mancini, who will be without the suspended Julio Cruz and Marco Materazzi, is also faced with a lengthy injury list.

Scudetto hero Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whose brace on Sunday helped them secure the title, is definitely out as is Nelson Rivas, Esteban Cambiasso, Ivan Cordoba, Olivier Dacourt and Walter Samuel.

Cristian Chivu has been included in the party to travel to Rome though.

Rodrigo Taddei is the only player definitely absent for Roma, although it remains to be seen whether Doni, Ludovic Giuly and David Pizarro will feature as all three are recovering from knocks.
