Outgoing Wolfsburg manager Felix Magath expressed his disbelief that his team won the Bundesliga title for the first time in their history.

The Wolves pipped Bayern Munich to the German league crown on the final day of the season after a 5-1 crushing of Werder Bremen maintained their two-point lead over last season's champions.

Magath had already announced his decision to join underachieving giants Schalke 04 in the summer, and admitted that he had no idea Wolfsburg would finish the season in such a fashion.

"I think that VfL will be in the running for the title in the future too," said a delighted Magath afterwards. "We have put together a young and hungry team with fantastic prospects.

"It's a dream, I never believed we had the chance to win the title, but the boys deserve it. And leaving now will be very difficult."

Any title hopes looked all-but lost when his team lost 4-1 at Stuttgart on May 9 but, after they bounced back with a 3-0 win over Dortmund three days later, his side regained their confidence and won their last four matches, scoring 18 goals and only conceding one.

"The game against Dortmund was the turning point," explained Magath. "Just three days after we'd been beaten in Stuttgart, that was certainly a crucial point.

"That gave the team some real self-confidence and it's exactly that confidence that we took into the Bremen game."

  1. Congratulations to Wolfsburg. it makes a good change and not the usual faces like Bayern Munich of VFB Stuttgart. Coming from Scotland it gives me hope that one day the Scottish League will not be won by Celtic or Rangers. One final point Magath is mad to leave Wolfsburg at this time.

  2. As usual Schalke did not live up to expectations. It was therefore great to see Wolfsburg do the business. Congratulations to Wolfsburg.

  3. I am really happy for Wolfsburg. I like the team because the skipper of the Black Stars of Ghana C.K. Akunnor was a captain there some season ago. He is now a successful coach in Ghana. He was so dedicated that the self centred Michael Essien.
    Go Wolfsburg Go Wolfsburg !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
